Can I claim my child who will be born this summer on my taxes from last year if I wait to file next year?
-
My wife is currently pregnant with our first child who we are expecting to be born around late July early August this year. Unfortunately I am currently unemployed due to me returning to school for more career training. However I did work most of 2010 and made pretty decent money and have received my 2010 tax forms for the past year. So my question is, is it even possible for me to hold up on filing my taxes this year and wait to my baby is born and file in 2012 with my newborn as a dependent which will maximize my refund for the following year and allow me to do more for my family moving forward?

No way, Jose.
Why stop there? Go back and amend your 09 to include the child too.
of course not
No. The child can only be claimed in years it actually exists,
no, only on 2012
Hey Mike, you probably can hold back your filing until 2012, but only for 2011, not 2010!
No. Only children who were alive (already born and not yet dead) during at least some of the year for which you are filing can be claimed. A child cannot be claimed on a return for any year prior to the child's birth, even if you file after the child is born.
No. Those taxes are for 2010, and the child wasn't born yet in 2010. When you file doesn't matter. To be claimed on your 2010 return, the child must be born no later than 12/31/2010.
