What is the stimulus payment?

Why would the IRS adjust a child support payment? The payment was from the stimulus package? ?

  • Here's the info...... I have joint physical custody of my daughter I have her every other week. I am court ordered to pay $412/month in support which I pay faithfully. My ex is supposed to pay $206/month in support, which unfortunately she has failed to due to the tune of being $3,000 behind on support; I was supposed to get her 2008 stimulus package amount of $1,200.00 (not bad for not working) she gets the stimulus package because she's remarried. The payment showed up on the Child Support Recovery Unit's website page on 7/19/2008 and has stayed at $1,200 until today ( I am eligible to receive it on 12/23/08) when it got cut in half. I don't own any back taxes, so the only guess I can arrive at is that her husband filed a "injured spouse" form with the I.R.S.. Fine. Why would they wait until 2 weeks before I'm eligible to receive payment to "adjust" this payment? Any advice thoughts, inquires appreciated.

  • Answer:

It takes a while to process the Form 8379. It may not have been filed with their tax return.

This is the reason they hold the payment so long. It takes pretty much the entire time to process and it must have just gotten done. Which is why it took until now to show the reduction.

IRS has nothing to do with setting child support payments.
