Am i mean? I just dont really know what theyre asking when they ask will you be my valentine?

so i have this friend, or well hes a friend of all my friends but we talk alot on facebook and i say hi to hm when i walk past him at school and he was like hey sexy wanna be my valentine, and i was like hahhaha hell yes, but not seriously, lets not exchange gifts and stuff lol was that mean? what exactly does it mean to be his valentine? its just exchanging gifts and hanging out on valentines day right? so if we dont exchange gifts i might as well just have said no? i dont know what to do

idk...was he joking? i think it sounds complicated but i cant say i would have done anything diffrent...it wasnt mean you may have disapointed him if he was serious but its not your fault it doesnt sound like he gave you much of a warning
