Why do I still have popups, and how do I get rid of them?
-
A couple of days ago, I began getting weird popups. They would have sound that would start playing a few seconds before they appeared so that I would have to listen to them before I could close them. Also, the popups seem to know what websites I've been/I am visiting. When I go to Netflix, I get popups that say I'm a Netflix user, so I should do x y and z. The same goes for other websites like facebook, and even my school website--it mentioned me being a student of my school just by my visiting the site. Creepy. Right now, I have Microsoft Security Essentials which, after a complete scan, doesn't find anything on my computer. I've been using Firefox, which I'm pretty sure isn't supposed to allow popups, and, after researching what to do online, I tried to uncheck the box to allow third party cookies to stop this. The popups, however, are still coming. The websites of some of the popups I've gotton are: http://tpjmp.com and http://creditalert360.com/1/1.php?t202kw=current.com Is there anyone who knows what I can do to fix this? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:
First. This is adware. It passes information about websites visited to some server, and they pass you back a popup with add. SuperAntispyware (SuperAntiSpyware.com) , Adaware, or spybot S&D are better at detecting them than Malwarebytes. But you should check couple things yourself: 1. Are there some strange add-ons in your browser, or a fresh toolbar? Disable them. 2. Have you installed fresh programs recently? Check if there was something about agreeing seeing advertisements "from partners" or using a toolbar.

Malware! Download MalwareBytes and do two full scans which will hopefully get rid of it.

you might try running malwarebytes anti-malware or ad-aware which you can get at: http://download.cnet.com/windows/ you might also try ghostery which you can get at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/?browse=featured ghostery lets you block tracking cookies from sites. there are also other privacy add-ons you can get here. just enter " privacy" in the search box. in firefox you can delete cookies and browsing history: tools>options>privacy>....... check the "see cookies" and "settings" buttons

I would suggest that you run another antivirus scan with Microsoft Security Essentials, as well as an antispyware or antimalware scan. If you need a free antimalware program, perhaps you should try using MalwareBytes, which can be downloaded from the link below. http://MalwareBytes.org Good luck and I hope I helped you!

Dont panic these pop ups are called rogues and can be fixed. I personally get my viruses fixed with norton and safety.live.com and i use avast on my laptop.Yes i would turn off the software when downloading. You should only have 1 av running at once btw. If you go to safety.live.com you can still have your main antivirus on.Download malwarebytes that might work too www.malwarebytes.org I hope this helped

More tightening of Firefox is required: My recommended Firefox Collection, for improved security, and a tad bit of 'appearance' mod's. https://addons.mozilla.org/collections/dunbar-pappy/dunbarpappy/ which includes Flash cookie (an x-tra evil type) blocker. At minimum get "NoScript" which blocks scripted assets (and tons of leverage vectors) until you allow them...much better than trying to get rid of malware picked up by global allowance. Also, Firefox has been hacked by Microsoft. Microsoft has installed (without your informed consent) into Firefox, rubbish that degrades the security of Firefox to little more than IE. Check your FF> Tools> 'Add-on's'> "Extensions" & "Plug-in's" boxes, and uninstall/disable .NET framework, Windows Presentation Foundation, Shockwave, Silverlight. These hacks re-enable the JavaScript exploit avenue. http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-199.htm The Silverlight (and maybe more) will try to re-install after some MS updates, so these procedures must be constantly monitored & redone when necessary. And, get this installed: ►"HOSTS file" (from mvps.org) which blocks evil webpage assets from re-directs which install malware or trashware. (Vista requires special instructions; on-page link) http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
