Virus causing my Email to distribute junk to everyone in my address book even when my computer is disconnected?
-
How do we fix my Yahoo Mailbox being used as a distribution point for junk mail? Someone has tapped into my email and is sending out junk mail to everyone in my address book. The odd thing is that even since I disconnected my computer, the junk keeps going out. So I do not know where the virus is - on my computer or actually on my Yahoo home page, if that is possible. My computer expert friend is baffled and suggested I contact you. If my homepage is infected, neither he nor I know what to do about it. Please advise. This is very upsetting! I have some valuable info saved in my mail files and I am very concerned that these jerks might access my bank account somehow. (We bank on-line.) Please help. - Christine

Answer:
This is probably due to a keylogger. The keylogger obtained your Yahoo mail account details, and it can now access ymail from any computer connected to the internet. Try changing your account password from another computer.

Yahoo mail is a Web base mail service. All your mail and contacts are stored out in Yahoo cyber space. Just like the facebook virus a few months ago, once you clicked on a bad link, it would send out invites using your frind list. Just because you closed your browser window, does not mean you are disconnected. You need to scan your PC with anti-virus and malware cleaners ASAP.
First, this is a public forum and not the Yahoo support line. Nobody who actually works for Yahoo will respond to your question. Sounds like what you are dealing is a virus that has infected one of your friends computer. There are viruses that read the address book on the friend's computer and then send out altered e-mails that look like they are coming from someone in the friend's address book. You may not be the one sending out the e-mails. Someone who has your address in their book may be doing it. Create a new e-mail account. Log on to the old account and forward any important e-mails over to the new account. And then delete the old account. You will keep all your information, but kill the ability for anyone to fake e-mail from it. But just to be sure the problem is not on your computer, you should spyware scan it with at least two different programs. (Spybot Seek&Destroy, Malewarebytes, and Ad-Aware all have free versions you can get from http://download.com ) No scanner is perfect as they all use different ways to detect and different list for what is considered spyware. But scanning twice you should get anything the first one misses.
