Can I stop unwanted pages from showing up in search engines?

There are a couple of strange pages containing my name that pop up when I google my name (one is some kind of people search engine I've never even created an account for). I deactivated the accounts and thought it would've been through with that but no, they still show up on search engines. Even though the link doesn't really take you anywhere anymore, I really don't want any of it to show, because the other link has my location in it and the other is just some weird awkward find-sexy-friends-through-videochat page. I don't want my possible employers etc to think that I'm into such nonsense - how could I get rid of the links?? Thanks!

It's very difficult to help you on this one because removal is dependant on which websites you need to clean up, some websites are easy, some are not, I would need to know the specific websites to point you in the right direction if at all possible. I do not suggest that you post the links in here (a public forum) for your safety! How many words are you typing in to google for it to show the results your are worried about? I've had the same problem as you, many many others have too! I will get back to you about good habits and software that should help protect you further in future.
