How to make a new password on a macbook that has been forgotten?
-
I forgot my macbook password. When it broke i sent it away and din't get it back for a year, so then i completly forgot. How do you recover that or make a new one? It says it in kerychains and access. But it really not, i clicked show passwords and it said i had to enter the password. I was going to make a new user but i have to have the account password and to install anything i have to have the password. Please help. Thank you so much.

Answer:
It has nothing to do with "MacBook" or whatever type of computer. It has to do with the version of OS X.... and you forgot to mention what version :( This method works for all versions: If you have a Mac OS X install disc, boot to it. Go past the language selection. From either the Installer menu or the Utilities menu, choose "Reset Password". Choose the account that has your short user name, not the "System Administrator". If you don't have an OS X install disc... Method 1: Take the computer to a neighbor who has a Mac, an Apple retail store, or a Mac service shop and ask them to boot it to an OS X DVD and reset the password. Method 2 (requires your knowing the short name of the user home folder): Restart and hold two keys together: Command key (⌘) and the "S" key. That starts the Mac in "Single-user mode". You'll know you are seeing single-user mode because the screen will fill up with white geeky text on a black background. Release the two keys when you see this. Wait until the last line says "sh-2.05a#" or something similar. Then go ahead with the steps below. Be careful to type the spaces such as the two in "/sbin/mount -uw /". Type: fsck -fy Press Return Type: /sbin/mount -uw / Press Return [for the next command, don't type any of the spaces except the one after "launchctl". This forum will shorten the long commands, so I added the spaces just to allow you to see the whole thing.] Type: launchctl load /System/Library /LaunchDaemons /com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist Press Return Type: dscl . -passwd /Users/username password (replacing "username" with the targeted user and "password" with the desired password) Press Return Type: reboot Press Return Method 3 (will delete your user account and put all your user documents into a disk image): Boot to single-user mode and: Type: /sbin/mount -uw / Press Return. (Nothing appears to happens, no problem. Also, you will see # again. That's fine; ignore it.) Type: rm /var/db/.applesetupdone (The normal format of Mac OS doesn't care about upper case.) Press Return. Type: reboot Press Return. (Now stuff appears to happen. You will finally get past the "Welcome" in a dozen languages and then you can create a new admin user. It should be a different short name from your old user. A few screens later, you come to the registration. Just choose "later". It doesn't come back later to nag. After you have completed the new user, open the Users folder and look for "Deleted Users". It will have a mountable disk image that contains all your old documents.
