Cold call from "Microsoft" scam questions?
-
I was called today on my home number by a woman saying she was from microsoft (from India, sounded like a call centre in the background) wanting me to turn on my computer as it has several viruses. I did this and she then proceeded to take me to my start menu and my computer which I had to right click on and bring up systems management. She then asked me to tell her how many error and warning signs had popped up in the logs I told her many, not an exact number and she asked how many computers I had, I lied and said only the one. She also asked what system we were running on which I told her (windows XP), she then asked me to do some things with my keyboard to allow remote access to my computer to remove the errors and fix everything. I told her no and hung up because by this time I had a feeling it was a scam.. My question is could she have gotten into my computer already even without me holding the start key and r down together? Would she have been able to access my computer whilst I was looking at my system management logs? If so will my normal anti virus and malware block her and any future attempts they may make to get into the computer without my knowledge? I feel so silly I am normally good at avoiding these sorts of scams.

There is only a tiny tiny chance that they know how to connect to your computer. If they do know this, its too late, your computer is already compromised.

I doubt it, she was most probably just rying to make some money out of you. She would probably be trying to turn off your firewall etc and change your network settings to allow her to gain access to your PC. The event logs are full of errors and reports on even the most healthy of computers, this is completely normal and most likely used as a scare tactic. Rest assured if she had access to your computer she wouldn't even have needed to call you in the first place. The most important thing: you hung up.
