Oookay. So I have my own account on my family's PC and I got a virus on it a while ago, but it was just on my account, and I think I got rid of it when it appeared, but I'm not sure. Whenever I try to open the internet, a box comes up that says "Choose the program you want to use to open this file: firefox.exe" and it comes up with a list of programs on my account. That happens when I try to open anything, and if the program isn't listed in that box then I can't open it. I can't download programs either. I tried downloading Gimp today, and when it finished downloading I clicked open, it says "application not found." Again, that happens whenever I try downloading any program and even when I try to save something on Microsoft Paint. Whenever I open a word document (the box will come up) and after I get it open there is a long code or something on the page. All my programs seem to now have an ".exe" at the end. All this is really annoying, and I have no clue if it has to do with the virus or not, but does anyone know how to get rid of it?

Answer:
DO NOT RESTART YOUR COMPUTER!! You will have to go to a good computer, or a different account, and download rkill, and put it on a USB drive, or put on disk. rkill is just a small executable, no need to install, it will kill the active malware, so it can be properly removed. READ THE DESCRIPTION, and scroll down to the rkill download links. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill After running rkill, I suggest getting MBAM, and perform a full scan. It is a must have Antimalware: http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=rb_content;main

wow, that's a long story. can you boot in safe mode? can you download these free programs that could detect a possible virus? http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-An%E2%80%A6 download and install this program, it's free. if that doesn't find anything, try these other two http://download.cnet.com/Hitman-Pro-3-32%E2%80%A6 for 32 bit PC or this 64bit http://download.cnet.com/Hitman-Pro-3-64%E2%80%A6 http://download.cnet.com/Combofix/3000-8%E2%80%A6 one of these programs should find the virus and remove it. In my case, combo fix did it for me. please email me direct, if you need further instruction. I answer so many questions that I can't always get directly back to individual posts.
