what they can do and what they will do are quite different..... there is no reason for the US Government to do this, even though they could. They could also take the electric grid off line but they wont.

that is actually in hands of the ISP(internet provider) but, if for say, legal reasons. they needed to do so, yes, its possible. because it goes in level of, government, then ISP. the government controls what the ISP does. and the ISP controlls what YOU do. so yes. its very possible, and very easily done. in a matter of seconds.
The USA controls the Internet Period, they control every web address, they have closed down loads of illegal copyright server website and bot net servers over the last month,
