How do I get rid of this computer virus?
-
This is how it happened: my friend was googling images and clicking on them... then he clicked on an image and all this stuff started popping up (I could tell my computer was getting a virus) so I quickly Xed out of the window as fast as I could but I think its too late... this is what happens now: every time I google something, and then try to click on the links that google gives me, it just gives me a blank screen, it never takes me to the sites. Also, when I google something that has a wikipedia page, I click on the wikipedia page and then it either doesnt work (blank white screen again) or it re-directs me to a totally different website!! =( Facebook, wikipedia and sites like that will work if I type them into the address bar, but as far as clicking the links that google provides for me, that doesnt work anymore =( What happened to my computer and how do I fix this?! I am so upset =(

Answer:
This is TDSS rootkit. You can remove it using TDSSKiller. http://www.trishtech.com/security/removing_tdss_rootkit_google_redirects_using_tdsskiller.php In addition, scan your computer with Malwarebytes Antimalware. http://www.malwarebytes.com/

First try system restore. This can be found in the start/all programs/system tools. This program will bring your PC back to a previous date. (Set the date for before you got the virus). If that doesn't work Try this free virus scanning software made by Microsoft: Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/security_essentials/default.aspx If this fails to work you will have to reset your PC to factory settings. When your PC is starting up press F8 or F11 multiple times. It will prompt you instructions on how to do this.

I just got rid of the redirect virus you describe today (after trying to figure it out for a couple weeks). I had Norton Security Suite updated and active but it was only finding cookies. In researching many people said Hitman Pro would fix it - I couldn't get the free trial to work, so I paid the $19.95 for a year of Hitman Pro...Hitman didn't get rid of "redirect" right off but through emails to the Netherlands (I'm in Utah) I got "Mark Loman" in their support group to help - WOW - he spent the time to get it done...several hours later after trying lots of different things...my redirect is gone. Thank you Mark. My PC is running much better/faster now and I can click on my searched links in Google without the "redirect"!

Scan your computer with Hitman Pro and Combofix. http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix More information about the redirect virus: http://deletemalware.blogspot.com/2010/02/remove-google-redirect-virus.html http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Web%20Search/thread?tid=6df7e15519290612&hl=en
