Is it possible to get a virus on your computer by downloading pictures?
-
.... Just like random pictures on google images... when you right click the picture and then click 'save image as' ... can that give you a virus? I was wondering because when you download songs from the internet it can give you a virus. I was also wondering if being on sites like myspace or facebook that have a lot of ads can give you a virus... or if playing songs on myspace can give you a virus. I was wondering because my computer just froze after clicking 'Remove Selected Infections' on the AVG scan and it wouldn't turn on and I just now got it to. (holding down power switch, go figure) I don't know exactly why that happened but I want to be really careful about viruses.

Answer:
Pictures can contain virusses, in fact, not too long ago (bout a year) microsoft discovered a security flaw through which a normal jpg or similar picture could be used to completely render your computer useless. Of course a security patch was created. Be carefull wherever you are or might be dwelling on the net. The best of us sometimes get malware no matter how hard we try, but i have a rule of thumb. If i don't know who or where it's from, i dont open it. In general thats all you can do. PS. If you have a fast system, i suggest the following security setup. Install Windows Defender if you dont already have it installed and your favourite antivirus software, which monitors your firewall, dont let windows run it's own firewall. This is pretty standard, but to make it more difficult for attackers and malware, install a virtual machine like Microsoft Virtual PC, and use a operating system like Linux (which is free) as your os on the vm. Do a clean install (obviously, lol), then do the same security setup as on your computer. Then use the vm's browser to to brows the net. You can always just expand further on this idea by using your imagination. Note on your edit: Once you are infected, simply deleting the file wont help at all. As a matter of fact, depending on the type of infection, the remedy of that would depend on the infection severety. A regular virus can be removed by the antivirus software, but if you were infected by some kind of rootkit, the only true way to be sure your clear, is to have the computer re-formatted. Hope this helps somewhat.

yes ofcourse
absolutely!! you can get a virus from a picture. Its actually very easy to hide viruses in a picture without your antivirus or spyware picking it up even after scanning it. As far as the myspace and facebook goes you just have to be very careful on what links you click on. There are thousands of malicious links on these sites.
