How do you make your account private?

How to make Windows 7 account private?

  • Currently, there are about 5 other people who use the laptop I use. I have my own account with a password and all that, but my files and downloads and pretty much every other activity I do on my account always shows up on everyone else's account. Is there any way for me to make it so none of my activity will pop up on their accounts?

  • Answer:

In Windows 7 navigate to C:\Users\ and right click your username. Click the Security tab. Remove the Administrators account by clicking Edit and then highlighting Administrators and click the Remove button.

The only way to keep your files and downloads hidden from others is to copy those files and downloads to a removable drive, like a USB flash drive or USB portable drive, and then deleting those files and downloads off the laptop, using a "secure erase". You will need third-party software to completely erase all "evidence" of your activities, as Windows stores an enormous amount of things like filenames, Internet histories, etc. One third-party software program is CCleaner, and you can get it free. You can select the details you want it to scan for, and after the analysis, select what you want to erase before you finally delete it, or change the details and scan again. There is a version that can be installed just like all Windows programs. There is also a "portable version" that can be copied to a USB drive and run from there, and thus never installed on the laptop. Home page for CCleaner: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner Builds page: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds These are not listed here in the same order as on the website. CCleaner - Portable Zip file, no installer This one does not install like Windows programs. Just extract the files and put them wherever convenient - even on a USB drive. Does not have to be on the laptop at all ! CCleaner - Slim Installer, no toolbar This version installs like most Windows programs. It has no toolbar. CCleaner - Installer The little box does not say so, but it has a toolbar. Not Recommended !
