As far as 'filtering' most will filter for spam and/or spam sources, but as to a specific virus, most will be using a 'signature' database, which will not be completely effective for unknown virii. Virus directly in a mail is possible, but more likely would be something trying to get you to click a link, which then leads to a malicious site. It can also arise from someone you know, whose machine has become infected, so best advice is 1) Never open attachments 2) don't follow links 3) do not have html enabled in mail & a browser that allows scripting.
