How can I stop these Microsoft Automatic Updates?
-
I'm tired of them - every time I do one of the updates, something on my computer gets ruined. First, it ruined Outlook Express and changed it into some Microsoft Office (the thing that makes Word) email, and my computer doesn't even have that, and I'm not paying for it! (So now I have to use some .exe file to open Outlook Express) Second, it made it so my computer couldn't view images, and I had to take hours to figure out what to do (which was download a registry file) And most recently, it ruined my WLM so that Plus! doesn't work, and that's a huge bother since everything is ugly without Plus! D: And goodness knows what else has happened. ANYWAY, to the point. How can I stop these fake/supposed/really messed up Automatic Updates? I'm pretty sure they're actually from Microsoft. I mean, nothing *that* bad has happened to my computer, just huge annoyances. It comes from some yellow shield on the icon tray.

Answer:
In my opinion that a great way to help your computer out. The step by step: 1. Start. 2. Control Panel . 3. Security Center. 4. Scroll to the bottom of that list, and you will find "Manage Settings For..." 5. click Automatic updates. 6. Now click turn off.

Updates don't ruin a computer, the user does (not trying to be mean, it happens on accident and I see it often). I recommending getting a tech to look at it or someone you know that has a lot of computer knowledge. It will save you headaches in the long run and all of your problems should be fixed. It seems like the more you have tried to fix it, the deeper you are digging the hole. The LAST think you want to do is disable automatic updates.
How do you know these problems and errors actually arise from Automatic Updates? Automatically Updates fix some security issues on your OS and Microsoft-endorsed softwares. Turning them off only makes your computer more vunerable to malware programs. Microsoft OS's and Endorsed Software usually have some "weakpoints" called vunerabilities and Automatic Updates downloads "hotfixes" to "cure" these vunerabilities. It is NOT ADVISABLE to turn off these updates and i STRONGLY DIS RECOMMEND THIS. I will advise you to download and update a copy of an antivirus software (Kaspersky recommended) and perform a full scan of your drives. Also run a registry cleaning software to fix registry value errors and de-congest your system. After all these, re-install the affected softwares. But if you still wanna turn off Automatic Updates, go to start>control panel>switch to classic view>"automatic updates">turn off automatic updates. (NOT RECOMMENDED).
You can turn off automatic updates this way: (In Windows Vista) 1. Click the Windows button->Control Panel. 2. Click the Security link. 3. Click the Turn automatic updating on or off link. 4. Check the "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" radio button. 5. I would also check the Recommended Updates and Use Microsoft Update checkboxes. 6. Click OK. Be sure to examine the Windows Update list sometime after the second Tuesday of every month and install the Security updates. (Click on the yellow shield icon in the Notification area of the Taskbar.) Hope that helps.
