What exactly is a fault bucket and what causes it?

What causes this error: "Function address caused protection fault"?

  • I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows Vista and for about the past month when I start up the computer a dialog box comes up and tells me there is an error message that can't be displayed on my screen and would I like to view it. When I say yes, my computer screen turns a murky green for a minute and then brings me to a blank screen with an error message dialog box. The bar on the top of the box says "C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe". The error message says "Function address 0x2d2173f caused a protection fault (exception code 0x000005). Some or all property pages may not be displayed." When I google searched similar error messages, the answers seem to say it has something to do with your printer, but I rarely print from this computer and the messages only pop up when I start up the machine, not when printing. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

  • Answer:

UNinstall whatever print drivers you have running on your machine. Reboot and see if the problem still exists. You can then go to your printer manufacturers web page and download the latest drivers for your printer and operating system. Hopefully that will clear the issue up.
