I got scammed and need to find an IP address through emails?

I sold my xbox to someone in Nigeria. I put the xbox on craigslist. I got all kinds of offers and then I got an email from a janet wilson. She wanted to purchase the xbox, but she wanted to buy it for her sister who is currently on a safari in Nigeria. She told me she would be willing to pay extra for the shipping. After crunching numbers I realized I would make an extra 20 bucks from this transaction. Little did I know that it was a scam. We emailed back and forth and finally they put the funds into my paypal account as they promised...Or so I thought. On the surface just reading thru my emails I believed that I had funds added to my accountant. This scam artist had taken a couple of paypal emails that would say that someone has entered funds into someones account. He then altered them to make it seems as, He had added funds to my account. Unfortunately I have never sold something through paypal. I read the emails and in the email from "paypal" I was reassured that after I emailed the shipping information to the "paypal" email address, I would see the funds in my accountant. The person made sure I used USPS because in shipping something out of the country there is no way of tracking the package to stop it within the USPS system. Unfortunately I shipped the xbox 53 dollars out of my pocket. Now instead of selling the xbox for 125, I have now paid someone 53 dollars to take my xbox from me. I am very very angered by this. There is some hope I do have though. I am still emailing the person that setup the transaction. They want me to send them money to ship it back. I would like to get the police involved in this to find if there is a way I could catch this criminal. I am supposed to get back to this person on wednesday when I "get paid" (that is what I told her). Is there anyway to track someone through there email account, like an IP address? I have already sent an email to the FBI. I am hoping they have a way to track this guy. Or who else should I get in contact with to get this guy in trouble.

Answer:
The IP is in the header data. Here is how to get it. http://compnetworking.about.com/od/workingwithipaddresses/qt/ipaddressemail.htm Note: GMail omits the IP from the header data. Note #2: You were a victim of what is known as a Nigerian, or sometimes called a 419 scam. Sadly, you will never see your XBOX, or your money. The thieves operate out of Nigeria is collective crime rings and none have EVER been prosecuted as the US has no authority, nor extradition rights in Nigeria. NEVER NEVER NEVER sell to any buyers outside of the US on EBAY or Craigslist. RED FLAG!!!!!! More info on Nigerian scams here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance-fee_fraud

Since their email address will be dynamic, and since by the time they collect ALL the items they have scammed, the will be gone. And the FBI have no authority in Nigeria. And the person you were communicating with will also be in Nigeria. Well done.
Contact the Postal Inspector's office. Your local post office can give you the contact information. Shipping via US mail allows for certian protections due to the fact that it is a federal service, and not just a corporation. Using US Mail to commit any sort of crime is taken VERY seriously in this country.
Most all of this sort of fradulant e-mail activity originates from black people in Nigeria, where the laws are weak and the authorities are easily bribed. Little can be done to bring these criminals to justice. USA laws obviously do not apply. For a piss-poor country such as Nigeria, these internet scams are a major source of "hard-currency" (US dollar, UK pound, you know REAL money) for their local economy. The officials there simply "look the other way" And The FBI will simply put your email in the delete bin, they can't be bothered with such petty stuff. Sorry. About the best one can do is scambait the b@$^@#ds and have some fun in the process. "So what is scambaiting? Well, put simply, you enter into a dialogue with scammers, simply to waste their time and resources. Whilst you are doing this, you will be helping to keep the scammers away from real potential victims and screwing around with the minds of deserving thieves." "It doesn't matter if you are new to this sport or a hardened veteran; if you are wasting the time of a scammer, or frustrating them in any way well that's good enough for us, and we would welcome you to join with our now very large community." Online fraud is indeed illegal. But tracking an IP address is cyber stalking, also illegal. If you can get the police involved, they can do it, but your XBox is in Nigeria now. Just be glad it wasn't something more. US laws do not apply to people in Nigeria; you better find out if Nigeria has laws against internet fraud. Also, a police in many states won't take a case about fraud if it's under a certain amount, 200 or 300 some dollars; I doubt the Federal Bureau of Intelligence would either. It sucks, but it's something you're going to have to live with. Just don't send money to have it shipped back, because it's probably another scam. Note: Please be informed that IP addresses change every time the computer is logged off and on. Not the full one, but the last few digits. Or even more simply, a static IP could be set up so no one can track it unless you use a hack.
You sent it by USPS so you're screwed because, like all government monopolies, they fail at serving their customers. Also, give up on the FBI and IP address lookup. I can tell you for certain, the FBI doesn't care and, since the crooks are in Nigeria, tracking the IP address to them is meaningless. They've already stolen your money, don't let them steal your time. Lesson learned. It is possible to trace someone through received email: http://www.ipaddresslocation.org/email-tracking/email-header.php http://www.find-ip-address.org/email-search/find-email.php Basically you need email header and both trace email tools above will show you a lot information's about email sender.
You are out your money. You won't get your Xbox back. The FBI and the police can't help you. You have been scammed. Sorry. Even if you got the IP address it won't do you any good. There is nothing anyone can do for you. You won't hear from these people ever again. Don't send them any money. They won't send it back. Don't be that gullible to fall for the scam again. You are one of maybe a hundred thousand people who have fallen for this scam and you won't be the last ~
