What can happen if a website logs and records ur IP adress?

i recently recieved an email fr. an old friend with a link leading to edonkeys.com ?.. and i have no idea what that is so i clicked the link and it lead to a blank page that said: this site is no longer avaible. copying and download movies and music is illegal and the court has the ability to fine you. your ip adress has been logged and recorded.. but the problem is that i didnt do anything but click the link! so i asked my older brother about it and he said that im screwed. so my question is why is this happening if i didnt do anything but click on the link? and what will/can happen.

This is a scare tactic. They did this when several other websites went down. This is nothing they can do. You accessed a website that said "this is illegal." ...That's NOT illegal, is it? Anyways, every website you visit logs your IP address.

Nothing can be done. All you did was access the website. The court has no right to fine you for accessing a website, even if it has illegal content. Sharing copyright-protected files is illegal, and those who share are the ones that can be fined. Answering the title question though, through your IP it's possible to find out your location, ISP, and with some further investigation, get the name of the service "owner", and with that, your home address and all the info listed along with it.

I have some news for you.... ...every website you visit logs your IP address. (By the way, "logging" and "recording" are the same thing...a log is a record of activity). Someone is looking to scare someone else. The fact that they logged your IP address doesn't matter. They can't do anything with it, because you didn't do anything wrong. Clicking on a link is not illegal. All web sites do some form of logging. if you had to worry about every site keeping logs, you'd never go on the internet. Don't worry about it. Your brother is wrong, too.
