How can you find a persons location from their IP address?

You can go to WhoIs.sc and plug in an IP address or web address and learn the details behind it. This, as illustrated, is the easiest way to go about determining where an IP address leads.

Type the ip address into http://ip-lookup.net/ . It will give you the general location. Specifics require you to have special permissions like a government entity.

You may not even find a general location. When I look up my IP address it shows 115 miles from where I actually am.

It's easy to find out the general area where someone is. Try this page, it starts out by showing YOUR location but you can change the IP address where it says "IP address to locate". http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?Getlocation But to find someone's actual address is a lot harder. To do that you have to figure out who their ISP is, and then convince them to check their records. Typically they will only do this if law enforcement asks for it.

You wont find their actual home address. Any of those IP locator's you can use can be anything up to 200 miles out. As a matter of curiosity I tried a few of them in the past. Although I live in the UK, results have given me living in Holland and Northern Ireland at the extreme and the nearest one gave me living in the middle of a railway track 45 miles away in the next county! That's just how accurate they are.
