How do I get nasty spyware off computer?

I think I have a spyware or adware on my computer? How do I get rid of it?

  • For the past couple of days, some weird website keeps popping up. I think I must have downloaded some kind of spyware or adware on my computer. Whenever I'm surfing the web or not surfing the web, a webpage from Google Chrome or Firefox keeps on popping up some kind of ads. McAfee didn't detect anything after I scanned it so I uninstalled that and downloaded Norton. Norton is still scanning my computer, so I'm not sure what's wrong yet. I also have Malwarebytes, but I'm not sure why that didn't work in protecting my computer. How do I get rid of this spyware or adware on my computer? Will it also steal my information or whatever I do on my computer?

  • Answer:

Malwarebytes doesn't protect your computer in real time- ie. it doesn't continually scan files and fix any files that are downloaded, you have to actually run the scan for it to detect anything. I suggest you run a malwarebytes scan periodically. If you want realtime protection, you have to pay for the full version.

Update your anti-spyware program. If you do not currently have a spyware removal program, there are many free, highly regarded software downloads. Disconnect your computer from the Internet. Even if you have Internet Explorer closed, as long as there is a connection available, the spyware may be connecting and causing damage. Unplug your computer from its modem or the modem from the wall. Check your "Add/Remove Programs" list from the control panel. If you see a spyware program listed, uninstall it. If you see a program you are not familiar with but are unsure whether it is spyware, check it out before removing it. Run your antispyware program. If you run it and are still receiving pop-ups, especially if you are still disconnected from the Internet, turn your computer off. Start it again and press the F8 key repeatedly until you see the "Safe Mode" option. Run the antispyware program while your computer is in safe mode. Revert your system to a date in time prior to the spyware infiltration. Go to the Start menu and point to "All Programs." Point to "Accessories" and then point to "System Tools." Click "System Restore" and follow the instructions on the "System Restore Wizard."

try to restore your computer back to an earlier time

Go into accessories and find system restore restore your computer to a time when you did not have the spyware or adware on ur computer

My Suggestion is you Download Microsoft security essentials with Malwarebytes free. They are both great free products and they can run together with no problems. In addition to that Microsoft Security Essentials has Real-time protection unlike AVG Free that does not come with that or root kit detection which is a much have. Also if you really want your computer to be safe download McAfee Site advisor it tells you if your on a site that has malware or not and if your about to download malware it will block it. PS Mcafee site advisor does not work with Google Chrome Web Browser.

The key may be Safe Mode With Networking. That sometimes keeps malware from protecting itself. Boot into it and run malwarebytes from there. I suggest you also download Ad-Aware Free and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run full scans with them in Safe Mode With Networking. Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there. To get into Safe Mode with Networking: 1. Log out and reboot your machine. 2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly. 3. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu. 4. Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password. 5. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. 6. When you're finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode. Another trick that may enable anti-malware and/or its installer program to sneak past the malware is to change the name of the anti-malware program itself. The names of the files and their locations differ between anti-malware programs, but the procedure is always the same: 1. In Windows Explorer, find the folder with the anti-malware. 2. Change the name of the program (it always ends with a .exe) to virtually anything else, but keep the “.exe” part. 3. Run that. Note that even if the anti-malware programs get rid of the malware, they may not be able to reverse the effects. Search the Web for possible fixes. Update and run full scans regularly, not just when you think you already have malware. Good luck. Note: There ARE free versions of these reputable programs on the websites listed. They just may not be obvious. Ad-Aware Free (free): http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ Spybot S & D (free): http://www.spybot.com/

First thing to do is reset your internet settings back to default, go to control panel, internet options, click on the "advanced" tab, then on the reset button, whilst in internet options click on the connections tab, then on LAN Settings and clear any ticked boxes, except for the "automatically detect settings box" finally click ok. Next thing to do is a quick scan with a program called Malwarebytes its very effective and free, you may have to download it to a USB memory stick using another computer and transfer it to the infected one if you are unable to get on the internet. Finally scan your PC with Hitman Pro it scans with five different anti-virus engines at once and only takes 10mins, click next and activate the 30 day free trial once the scan has finished and it will remove any malware found. http://www.malwarebytes.com http://www.surfright.nl/en/hitmanpro Please email me and let me know if it worked, thanks :)
