Is it legal for your work to sieze your laptop you are using, even if the laptop doesnt belong to the company?
-
I am in a overtime lawsuit with my employer. They took everyones work laptop to find e-evidence for the lawsuit. I heard that is legal. The problem is, the laptop I use doesn't belong to my employer, it belongs to a customer we do services for. So it is not their equipment. . .how can they invade my privacy and my customers privacy, just because I am in a lawsuit with my employer? Has anyone heard of similiar situations? thanks so much. .

Answer:
Your "privacy"? That laptop is work-related so you have no privacy there, it's sole purpose is for your job. I suggest you contact the company that provided the laptop and tell them what happened with their laptop. But beyond that, if you are in a lawsuit and they took the laptop to prove their side, you need to talk to an attorney about it and get legal advice, not advice on Yahoo Answers.

I've seen this before, it never happened to me but what I used to do was boot to an external usb drive running linux, so all my data was safe. After I would disconnect the external usb drive and no one was the wiser. Some system admins think they're clever by disabling the boot function in the bios for usb drives/cdrom, etc. In this case I always kept an extra hard disk in my bag, I'd open the case, disconnect the original, connect mine, then boot to my linux, voila. But I think you're in a pickle where they have the latop, I hope you backed any important data needed for the lawsuit.
If you are in a lawsuit with your employer then your own lawyer should be advising you about this sort of thing.
