What is an antivirus program?

What is the best antivirus program on the market currently?

  • I just uninstalled webroot Internet security 2011 because it blocked my Internet for the second time in the past week. best part was that webroot would not uninstall but now it's off finally. I've used three programs which are trendmirco norton and webroot since 2007 for antivirus protection. I just need to know what is the best protection on the market that doesn't suck or too many poor reviews. my parents want the computer to have antivirus protection on it tomorrow after I come from work. So what is the best cause I don't want a program that sells you bullSHIT protection!!!

There's not really a "best" one. Its really user preference. Each one doesn't always catch every virus due to missing definition, virus is too new, or it just plain missed it. Norton has been known to be a resource hog, but still a good virus program. Avast if free, but comes with nothing special. All of them have their UPS and downs, so it all comes down to user preference. If you are just careful, you dont need a anti virus and you still won't get infected.

If your parents are only going to use their computer for basic general use, like web browsing and e-mail, buying an anti-virus solution is a waste of time, money and effort. Microsoft Security Essentials is more than sufficient, and coupled with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, you'll have a decently secure PC. I also like using Firefox with AdBlock Plus and NoScript. The best security is a layered approach.

Get kaspersky, Its pretty good. I also tried norton and it aint too bad but kaspersky is better.

On a recent poll of a group of computer techs, they recommended Malwarebytes most often to their customers. MS Essentials came in 2nd. See full results at: http://mn-tech.net/anti-virus-survey/

The best one will be/should be YOU! You have to surf the web smart, you have to keep your computer clean, you have to change pass words often. You have to shut it down if you are not going to be on it for X amount of hours. You have to install a reputable virus protection and keep it updated constantly. You have to not give out your email easily to just anyone and not open up any emails from people you do not know. You have to Run microsoft updates often. This is probably not all of the YOU virus protection must do's but these are the ones I am aware of. Anyone care to elaborate on what else would make the "best anti-virus program"? Honestly as to which store bought program will work best is going to very from person to person. Do not get one that is free. That is all I have to say.

norton or kasperseky

Well, there is no best, but I recommend ones that have done good and gotten good reviews time after time. My picks are: -------------------------------------- Both of these top two scanners have similar (Great) detection rates and are “neck and neck” as the best Free anti-virus if you ask me. Avast – FREE - ( http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download ) OR Avira – FREE - ( http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus ) Those are Free, but another good choice is, (3) Eset's NOD32 Anti-virus , which provides great protection and no system lag, though its not free. http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner is Eset's Online Scanner which is free to use Kaspersky while being my #4 pick is not as good as it use to be, but I had loved it as my only AV recommendation from about 2000-2009. It may not be one of my top 3, but its a solid #4 and one I feel loyal to, since it kept me safe for so many years (FYI, I switched for free products getting reviews just as good from security sites... not due to infections getting by Kaspersky) AV Compartive Report for 2010 ( http://www.av-comparatives.org/en/comparativesreviews/summary-reports) AND according to the newest, May 2011 reviews, Avira and Kaspersky take top honors. -Xmetalfanx
