Can someone give me an introduction to makeup?

  • I'm 18 years old and I've never once used make up. I've just started getting really interested in it and I want to learn. I am African American and I have a darker complexion. I don't really want to use foundation, but I'm into everything else. I'm mainly into eye shadow. If I were to use foundation I would want it to look natural. If anyone would be kind enough to give me some helpful advice on where to get started it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

  • Answer:

Applying makeup to an African American complexion can be a little tricky as far as determining the best shades and hues to bring out your natural beauty. Choosing the right products is important in creating a natural appearance, however, with so many products on the market, it can be confusing to determine which is right for your skin. With a few simple guidelines, applying makeup to your face can be easy. Things You'll Need Moisturizer Foundation Concealer Mascara Eye shadow Blush Lipstick 1 Wash and moisturize the skin. The first step in applying makeup is washing and moisturizing your skin. This will ensure that you face is clean, soft and ready for makeup application. 2 Apply concealer. Purchase a concealer that is 1 to 2 shades lighter then your skin tone. Apply the concealer under your eyes and on problem spots. Select a foundation that is a perfect match to your skin. This is easier to accomplish when visiting a department store and having a color match done. However, you can also achieve this by testing the foundation on the inside of your wrist or along your jawbone. Look at the color in the natural light to determine if the foundation is a good match. 4 Apply blush to your checks. Darker blushes usually look the best on African American skin tones. Cream blush is good for African American women with dry skin and a powered blush is best for those with an oily complexion. 5 Apply eye makeup. A dark black mascara looks best with darker skin and eyes. Apply one or two applications of mascara to the top lashes only. This opens up the eye area and makes your eyes appear brighter. 6 Choose an eye shadow. The best colors for darker skin tones are shades of gray, brown and mauve. Lightly sweep the eye shadow across the top eyelids for daytime use. 7 Apply lip color. For daytime use, choose a berry lip gloss. For an evening look, go for a mauve or rose color. Use a lip liner to outline the lips before applying lipstick. After your lips have been lined, fill in the outline with the gloss or lipstick.

Although the cheap make-up might be tempting i would recommend not to go for it because if its foundation it can lead to acne and also it wont last very long but don't buy really expensive make-up because it would be a waste. Face.. Well if i were u and was getting foundation i would go to any local make up shops choose a shade you think might be natural and test some on either the back of your hand, the side of your face or your chin check it in the mirror and if you think it looks ok and natural then get it. If you cant decide then ask one of the people that work there or a friend. If you buy a foundation i would recommend you put moisturizer because if not your skin can become very dry. Buy a foundation sponge and apply the foundation when the sponge is wet the rub it in you can also use a foundation brush but i find the sponge gives a better effect. Eyes.. Normally i wear a plain eye shadow with gliter liner on my lid and silver pencil liner underneath and then apply some mascara i only apply mascara because my eyelashes are short if yours are long theres no need! . To create a gorgeous nighttime look, use light, medium and dark eyeshadow shades in graduated tones. Apply the dark shade along your lash line, the medium shade on the crease, and a light shade up to the eyebrow bone but not beyond. Soften and blend any hard edges so one color seems to melt into the next. 2. To open up your eyes so that they appear livelier, place a dot of a light shadow in the inner corner of each eye. 3. For a sexy, smoky effect, trace the upper and lower lashes with a dark shadow then smudge with a blending brush. To optimize the look, this can also be done over eyeliner. Tip: For a natural-looking eyeliner and the illusion of lusher, fuller lashes, use a dark brown eye pencil and carefully press a series of dots between your lashes following your lash line. Tip: For the sophisticated look, draw a smooth fine line alone the top lashes with liner. Cheeks.. I dont really do anything to my cheeks occasionly i apply a light shade of blusher to my cheek bones but thats really it. Lips.. For a very natural look put on a natural lip stick and applyclear gloss to the middle this makes the lips look fuller Always put lip balm on or else you will start to get very cracked lips and it looks tacky if you put lipstick over cracked lips so always try and apply lip balm when your lips feel dry i always carry lip balm with me so i can re-apply where ever whenever. I would recomend blistex for when your lips are dry and cracked Hope this helps! x

Don't use foundation. It doesn't work for darker people. For eyeshadow, use lilacs, greens, silvers, and golds. Those will look nice on your skin. Always use black eyeliner. Use a sheer pink or clear lip gloss And most importantly, don't cake stuff on your face. Only you can decide when enough is enough.

so for foundation, i would recommend you use a tinted moisturiser i like the e.l.f one ( ww.eyeslipsface.co.uk/com)

Makeup is great sometimes, but you dont want to get addicted...that how people ruin their skin and become ugly. There are many rules about makeup, but in my opinion the most important ones are as follows: 1. DONT TOUCH THE SENSIITIVE AREAS: dont apply primers to eyelids and under eyes, however good it may sound to be able to cover up those veins or undereye circles, it is highly terrorizing to your skin. See that skin is thin and soft, the makeup, however light it promises to be is heavier and weighs the skin down causeing stretching, wrinkles, and other bad things. 2.DONT CAKE: a sure sign of a newbie to makeup is caking, that is apply too much foundtion, powder or eyeliner/eyeshadow/mascara to the face. A good way to keep yourself from caking makeup is to look very closely into the mirror when applying it. This helps you see every little imperfection and cover it, and it helps you see when you begin to have chaffing on your face (skin breaks and you can see little whitish lines). If you start to notice that, its a sign that you have enough on. Also, when you back away to the distance away from the mirror where a person would usually be from you, you see a more blurred picture and you cant see those imperfections as much, so being close helps you see them from the moment they appear 3. DONT BE TOO INVENTIVE: yes, having your own style is nice, and uniqueness is something that nobody needs to work towards because it is already tue for everyone, but sometimes people want to grab attention with crazy eyeliner or something. dont. it's just gross and makes people think you're an attention seeker. Try to gently play up your natural beauty and hilight that. 4. THERE ARE NO RULES: i just contradicted myself here, but in some instances there are no rules for makeup. those girls in the makeup tutorials on youtube all follow a special regime, (ex: prime, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara--> for eyes) You dont have to. You can do whatever looks good, maybe you dont need powder on your face, or you dont always need eyeliner, it's up to you, just dont feel forced to wear eyeshadow with mascara, or foundation with powder...see whata mean??? :) You can youtube some makeup tutorials and watch their technique, and color choice for some ideas.
