Can I have twins?

Can I Have Twins When Im Older?

  • umm , im just curious , because when i atleast get older i want to have twins , it runs in my family on both mother and father sides , my mom has a set of twins(girls) and said i might carry it on , and she has twins in her family because her cousin has another set of twins(girls), and my dad's niece has a set of twins . so is it possible for me having twins , i've got a reason why im asking this , probably about 2-3 weeks ago a woman that my mom knew came up to her and asked how my older sisters are and she said alright , then asked how i am then she said alright and that woman asked how old i was and my mom said 14 and i guess that woman was telling my mom i might have twins because the last family she went to she talked to that 14 year old girl and probably in her late 20's she had twins , and my parents are wondering if that she's predicting my future... these awnser's well if i would get them would probably go on to my life , i may only be 14 but im not planning on having kids until im done collage or university.

  • Answer:

the tendency to have fraternal twins (ie. non-identical twins) is partially due to gene(s) which result in the release of multiple eggs in a single period. This tendency can be passed down from mother to child. Since your mother had twins she likely has this tendency and as such you may have inherited a higher likelihood of having twins. Your fathers genetics actually play no role in your odds of having twins, this one is entirely dependent on what you inherit form your mother. Despite the fact that you have a higher-then-usual chance of having fraternal twins your chances still aren't very high. The best statistics I could find (and they aren't perfect) suggest that you have a 1 out of 17 (or lower) chance of having twins per pregnancy. Your odds of having identical twins is still just as low as everyone else's odds, which means it's really really unlikely. Finally I have to say something about the whole 'predicting the future' thing. I don't know how literal you were with that statement, but the scientist in me has to point out that it's impossible to predict the future. There has been a prize of a million dollars avilible to anyone who can show any concert evidence of the ability to predict the future or show any other form of paranormal ability for decades. Despite thousands attempting to win the prize no one ever has, because these abilities don't exists. For that matter Quantum Mechanics proves it's impossible to predict the future because of the inherent randomness of the quantum world. We can't even predict if Schroedinger's cat is still alive, dead, or some half dead zombie thing (don't ask).

Well, if it runs on both sides on your family it is completely possible. It skips a generation, generally. I don't think that lady was predicting your future and I wouldn't worry until it comes time to have a baby in the future. Just warn your husband it's possible. ;)
