Serious question about diabetes?

Gestational diabetes question?

  • I have 2 children and my Husband and I am working on a third. With my first pregnancy, everything was actually perfect.I really felt great throughout the whole 9 months. With the second,I was about 15-20 lbs over the weight that I wanted to be.I will also admit that I ate poorly, snacking on things I should not have been eating(you know how that can add up.) I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.I was able to manage it with diet but still needed a small dose of medication in the morning since once I woke, before I ate,my sugar would be high. It was awful having that during pregnancy and I have then learned that diabetes runs in my family. I also have heard that I am more likely to develop diabetes later in life. With all this said,I am more cautious of what I eat and am exercising as well. I am trying to be more on the slimmer side like with my first pregnancy weighing 125 lbs. I gained 15 lbs the first time around and starting at 145 the second time around gaining 16 lbs. Currently I weigh 135 and am trying to reach my goal of 125.Do you think that if I am exercising and eating healthy and gaining weight at a normal pace during this pregnancy, that I could avoid getting the diabetes this time around? Did seem strange that with the first I was fine, but with the second I got the diabetes. So I am thinking that this may help to avoid it.What do you think?

  • Answer:

well, it's more likely you will end up with it for the pregnancy... however, you've decreased those odds by being healthy. I am type two diabetic, and I'm pregnant with my 4th. It's not fun, but it's definately do-able. Happy baby making!

It's 50/50, but you are less likely to have GD this time around given the attention you've given to exercise and diet. It's also hard to say because some doctors are using appalling low numbers to diagnose GD when there is no evidence that these lower numbers improve outcomes. On one board, a woman posted that she had a fasting number of 92 and the doctor considered that GD. That's ridiculous!! That is NORMAL blood sugar.
