How do i get custody of my stepson?

  • how do i get sole custody of my stepson that i have solely cared for for 2 years. What is my first step to take? btw i live in canada. His father lives in another town and basically wants nothing to do with him and only took custody of him cause i wanted him away from his mother's abusive b/f who she has since married. This child has a disability and needs a parent that loves him and provides his needs.

You can take it to court and say you have been caring for him and that he needs someone to take care of him, but you getting full custody of a stepson that isn't technically yours is highly unlikely.

This is a tough one as you are not a blood relative but what you have going for you is that you have been this child's caretaker for the last two years. The first - and most important - thing to do is to hire a lawyer and proceed in family court. Good luck.

It will be very hard but you seem very determined to take care of him. You have to get a lawyer but don't get your hopes up, if his mom decides she wants him (and she is clean and can provide the basics, she'll get him).
