Are irregular periods okay?

TTC and Irregular Periods??

  • My husband and I have been TTC for a little over five months now and nothing has happened (obviously).. I used to be on birth control for almost four years due to painful cramps and irregular periods but I stopped taking it almost a year ago when we first decided it was time for a baby. I have irregular periods that are anywhere from 27 to 35 days long, so predicting ovulation is becoming almost impossible it seems. We have tried OPK and BBT, but nothing seems to work. We can just never get it right!!! My GP does not seem to take the irregular periods or heavy bleeding and cramping during my period seriously at all, she prescribed a painkiller called Ponstel for the cramps even after i told her about TTC and she said it would not effect my chances of concieving... am i crazy or do these symptoms i have sound like something far worse than she thinks?? -irregular periods -heavy bleeding during periods -severe cramps at the onset of period -and sometimes painful BM's during period (sorry, TMI) Should i be concerned? or did anyone else have these issues and go on to conceive naturally?

  • Answer:

I had the exact same things you describe when I came off Yasmin birth control. My periods never did get regular until I did concieve, we didn't use the ovulation tests and I became pregnant 6 months after coming off. The cramps did get better towards the end, but my cycles were also more like 45 days long. I'm now 16 weeks pregnant. :) Good luck!

Go to an OB/GYN. If your GP is not taking your concerns seriously, then you need to get a second opinion. Most women with irregular periods are treated for PCOS (such as myself). I had irregular periods (start light brown spotting and going through an 18 pk of pads in less than 4 days), severe cramps, low energy, weight gain, etc. I went from Dr. to Dr. until on finally told me what was going on. I suggest you see the right Dr. Or another Dr. until you get one that is willing to help you. Good luck and lots of baby dust!

I think you need a new doctor! I had one that I had gone to since I started my period. I have really irregular periods as well. My first doctor told me that it takes couple sometimes two years to get pregnant. I was only having periods like every three months and I never knew when they would arrive. There was no way I was going to go through that for two years. I didn't have that much of a connection with her and my sister loved her doctor so I went to her. As soon as I told her that I was ttc, i was getting a period every three months, bbt was crazy to read, and i never got positive opks she immediately did a work up on me. We had been trying for 7 months at that point. I had blood work done and an ultrasound just to make sure everything was okay. Once all that was taken care of she gave me clomid about a month later. I think there are so many doctors out there that just think of you as another statistic and put your needs to the side. Find a new one that you feel comfortable with and that seems to care about you and why you are there!
