What does Metformin do for infertility?

Is any one else ttc having a secondary infertility, and on metformin. Even though i dont have pcos?

  • my doctor put me on 1500mg of metformin for ttc. i am not diabetic and do not have pcos. I was getting very sick so i stopped taking it. I think i might just do 500mg. I had tests done on my thyroid and insulin, glucose a full lab. My doctor also had me have a ultrasound done, no cysts i even had eggs in my left ovary. Every thing came back fine i am over weight which i have been eating healthy and getting exercise in. Has anyone else gone through this. I am so grateful for my son, i just wish he could have a sibling. I feel like its hard to talk to people about this, i dont want anybody to think i am ungrateful for him. Especially since he is my whole world. Is there anything else i should be doing to conceive as naturally as possible?

    I am writing under my husbands login. Metformin is used often by fertility specialists to help promote ovulation. One of the side effects is increased fertility. I took the same dosage for two years because it helped keep the cysts on my ovaries at bay. Are you ovulating regularly? I would keep taking it and the side effects will wear off about a couple of months. It may not help you get pregnant but it certainly will not hurt you or prevent you from getting pregnant.

Is your doctor a reproductive specialist? Because I find that quite weird that you would be prescribed metformin unless you were prediabetic or had PCOS. In addition, your doctor should have stepped you up on metformin, not have you take the full dose right away because it causes severe gastrointestinal problems for most people. I started with 500 mg, for a week and then moved up 500 mg every week until at dosage.
