Did we miss ovulation or was this close enough?

Most accurate method to pinpoint ovulation for insemination?

  • Hey everyone, I am a lesbian and am trying to conceived via a friend of mine (sperm donation) who does not live very close to me. He lives 250 miles away so I can only see him once a month. So I REALLY need to be able to calculate the best day for me to conceive, preferably the day before ovulation. I've rented the Ovacue and it did not work and caused me to miss the LH surge that I could have caught using OPKs. I'm now considering the Clearblue Easy Fertility Monitor, as it does not work with saliva electrolytes. I was told that temping could be what I need to get a better idea of when I usually ovulate (right now I have no idea). I do have 28 day cycles on average. I just don't know what my Luteal phase length is right now. Anyway, does anyone know of a good method I could use? It seems I never catch the right day to inseminate. It's very frustrating :(

  • Answer:

OPKs in combination with temping are probably your best bet. The thing with temping is that it won't tell you you're about to ovulate, it will only tell you that you already have ovulated. OPKs will give you about 36 hours notice. Since a woman's luteal phase is the same each month, and if your cycles are regular, you should be able to calculate when you are ovulating each month. Keep in mind that sperm can live up to 5 days so if you're a couple of days early it shouldn't affect your chances. Good luck and baby dust!!!

fertilityfriend.com is an awesome resource! If you have never tried it you should know that it has tutorials that teach you how to make it easier for you to pinpoint your day of ovulation. Temping is a great place to start and checking your cervical mucous is another good option. Also the book Taking Charge of your Fertility is a good resource. I would suggest starting to temp so that you can figure out your cycles and learn your average LP length and day of ovulation. Good Luck to you!

Sorry to hear that you have that very short window every month :( Temping wouldn't work as it will only tell you a couple of days AFTER you have ovulated. However, if you do it for a few cycles you get a good idea of approximately when you will ovulate. Have you considered www.ovwatch.com? I haven't heard much reviews but the few I have got pregnant after a month or two. Other women have told me they like the Clear blue digital ovulation sticks. They give you a smiley for yes so it's clear as day if your ovulating or not. But remember, you want to inseminate BEFORE ovulation since sperm lives in you for 3 to 5 days and your egg lives for only 24 hours. Good luck!!! Bunches of baby dust thrown your way!
