Where can I buy crib hardware?

Bought a crib... should I buy the toddler guardrail and adult conversion rails now?

  • Just bought a crib for my first baby. Planning on having at least one more kid later. The crib will convert to a toddler bed and then to a full size bed. But to do this I need to spend an extra $260 on the toddler guardrail and the adult conversion rails. Advice says to buy these things now, while your crib's model is still in stock. A quick look at Ikea's web site shows kid beds sell from $80 to $160 bucks. If I don't buy the rails etc., then I will end up having to buy a big kid bed for each of my two kids. That would be a minimum of $160-$320, assuming prices don't go up and I actually like the Ikea choices. If I do buy the guardrails etc., then I may not use the toddler/full size bed for the first kid anyway - because I may reuse the crib for the 2nd kid. Which means I'll have to buy at least one kid bed anyway. What do you think I should do?

  • Answer:

I think the guardrail may be a good way to go for now. As you said, you may end up reusing the crib for number 2. But, depending on how far apart they are, you can use the crib for number 1, then but the guardrail on it until you need the crib for number 2. At that time, you can look into another bed for your first. Toddler beds aren't all that expensive and are readily available.

Buy them. I have too many friends that did not buy all the pieces and they no longer sell the styles they need. I had one friend spend days looking on eBay for what she needed and absolutely regretted not buying everything at the time she bought the crib. I think she ended up buying a toddler bed in the long run, for as much as the guard rail AND full rails would have cost her. Better to be safe than sorry. I bought all the pieces and I still don't know if I will use the toddler bed for my 1st one or use the crib for my 2nd either...but I figure someday, someone will use all the parts.

If there is any part of you that wants to use this crib as a toddler bed or a big kid bed down the road then buy the conversion kit. if you don't you'll have a pain in the bum bum trying to find it later on! even if it sits in the closet until your second child is big enough to use it, that's ok. it is there waiting... and you can always use it as a spare bed if you find kids beds that you like more. or you can sell it. you probably wont get what you paid but with the conversion kit you will get a lot more than just the crib alone.
