Why do you get a bloody nose?

Why does my daughter get a bloody nose when she cries?

  • My daughter is 5 years old and has recently been having several nose bleeds, only when crying. At first it wasn't very often but has happened the past three days straight, once a day. She'll get very upset and start to cry then blood gushes out within minutes. The amount of blood and length of bleeding seems to increase the more it happens. Even more alarming for me was that she had a very large (well for the nose) blood clot. I was thorough in looking and it was definitely a clot, not snot. Has anyone else experienced this in their children or know if it's common??

  • Answer:

Do you live in an area that gets very dry air in winter? Sometimes that can cause nasal passages to dry out and then they can easily bleed. The clot is concerning I think. I would ask the Dr.

Crying leads to a higher blood pressure, thin veins in the nose can burste which can cause the blood. Had it myselve even as an adult. Can't say this enought: consider a DOCTOR. Yahoo! shouldn't be used for medical questions. PLZ.

I've had bloody noses since I was a kid -- she may be predisposed, it may be the winter weather. As for the blood clot, as gross as this is, it was snot... just with blood in it. Definately take her to her pediatrician to have her checked out JUST in case, but I wouldn't get crazy worried about it just yet. Sorry she displays such a show of crying, it helps increase the drama factor, eigh?!?!?

I always had issues with nose bleeds from kid till present - I always have to be careful to have a tissue with me. Def go to the doctor - not sure if she is too young to be cauterized if it is a real problem but like me, some people are just prone to it. When I had my first big clot come out, I was like 12, and we went to the dr immediately.

My sister gets nose bleeds when she gets really stressed. she has done since she was about 10, she's 30 now and still gets them. Not sure what causes it though. You should take your daughter to the Dr just to get this checked out. Good luck! x
