How to get nicer teeth?

How to get toddler to let me brush his teeth?

  • My son is 16 & 1/2 months he will be 17 months on August 8th, well he only has 6 teeth. He got his first 2 at 9 1/2months then the next 2 at 10 months. Once he had those 4 teeth i started brush his teeth and would let him try to brush them after i made sure i did it. He started fighting me so i kind of stopped brushing them for a while but he just got 2 more teeth last month at 15 months old and i have been struggling to try and brush them. It is so hard to brush his teeth that i literally have to hold him down and open his mouth to be able to brush them. He wants to brush them himself but i know hes not really brushing them just more of playing and trying but definitley no where near good enough. I am losing my mind and have no idea what to do to get him to let me brush his teeth. I hate having to force him but if i dont then they dont get brushed and i dont want my toddler having cavities. Any HELP please on what i can do to make it more pleasent for both him and I. and any tips on how to make it fun so he wants to continue it. Any opinions and ideas are welcome! Thank you in advance.

Ok your trying too hard. Give him a small tooth brush with a little or no paste on it. Let him chew on it, and "play" with it. Make sure he rinses. after any sugary foods. Let him think he's in control that's what its about. brush you teeth when he does. he'll copy you. let him brush yours... let him get the actions down and you can worry about the "details" later. if your doing this daily then he'll be good against cavities.

you HAVE to do what you HAVE to do to get the job done! You could try making him laugh to get it done, but if you have to hold him down to do it, so be it!

I have one of those infant finger-cot tooth brushes that oral gel sells. I also have several toddler tooth brushes. I brush my daughter's teeth two to three times daily (at least twice daily - in the morning and at night.) I only worry that of the three possible times that they're brushed, that they're brushed "well" once. That relieves all stress from the other two brushings and she can even do it wholly herself if she wants those other two times. When we brush her teeth we make up a tooth brushing song to make it fun. Often we'll brush our teeth together and I'll coach her by showing her how it's done. I praise her for her wonderful work and say things like, did you get the top, did you get the bottoms? At least once daily (at this point, twice daily) I'll ask to "check her work" and when I check it, I'll brush them well. She doesn't fight me because I'm simply checking what wonderful work she did while brushing her teeth. If I feel I haven't gotten them brushed really well, I'll use the finger-cot tooth brush. Sometimes I think you have to feed him the story line. Saying things like, "X loves to brush his teeth and does a really good job at it!" or "I'm so proud of how well X brushed his teeth today, want to show dad how you brush 'em?" Let him do it all himself and then say, "oh, let me see that tooth for one second" (and then get in there and scrub a little.) Those are the things that have worked for us! Good luck!

i think he might a clean damp face cloth on his teeth, oh wow my son at 25 has the most gorgeous white teeth people comment on. and i din't even think to brush his teeth at 17 months. don't give him sugary cereals or soda, i can tell you that. however i would not hold him down, it would cast a negative light on teeth brushing.

Brush your teeth with him! All I can really say is be patient, don't force, just wait for him to catch up. Brush your teeth together, looking straight into a mirror. Or maybe you could try having someone else that he's close with show him. Maybe your son will cooperate more. My last suggestion is to make him his first dentist appointment when he gets all of his teeth. Surely he'll listen to the dentist.
