What do you need for kid traveling?

Need advice for 'big kid' transitions?

  • I have a 2.5 year old and know I need to start the big kid transition. I need to start potty training, get rid of her bedtime/naptime binky, and transition her crib to a bed (she has outgrown her travelyard and when we travel, she does not understand that a real bed is for sleeping and not a trampoline for jumping. I was thinking if her bed at home was a real bed, instead of a crib, the transition when traveling would not be as drastic.) Should we just have a big kid day, go pick out sheets and rewards for potty training and do it all at once, or one step at a time? If I should only do one or two things at a time, any advice on the order? This is my first child and I'm really not sure what the best thing would be. Thanks!

  • Answer:

One step at a time worked best for my kids. We talked a lot about how they were going to get "big girl beds" and how they would start using the potty like "big kids" and not "baby" diapers (to toddlers, "baby" always seemed like a real negative connotation). We did sticker charts for potty training with our kids (they all loved this!). As for the big kid bed, we waited to introduce it to them at nighttime so that they were a bit tired, and we'd lie in bed and read a few stories before beddtime. Good luck!

One thing at a time. If you try to do too much at once it will only overwhelm her. Do it in whatever order you think she is ready for and don't rush her. Good luck!
