My three year old daughter has a body rash. What do I do?
-
The rash starts on her stomach and then spreads to her back. She then gets it on her face and then everywhere else. It starts off a little pinkish and then gets blood red. It is a very fine rash until it gets blood red and then gets really bumpy. It is also very itchy to her. She first started getting these rashes when she was about eleven months old. This is the fourth time she has gotten this rash. The first time she got the rash I was told it was a virus on the outside of her body. The third time she got the rash was the worst and she had to have steroid shots every week because it wouldn't go away. I took her to an allergy doctor because her pediatrician couldn't figure out what she had. They just kept thinking she was having an allergic reaction to something. The allergy doctor did an allergy test and she wasn't allergic to anything they tested her for. I was told she had non allergic eczema but wouldn't the rashes happen more frequently if it was that? And wouldn't it be a different type of rash, like very scabby? I am asking because my niece has eczema and it doesn't look my daughter's rash. She has had the rash about four times in three in a half years. I don't want to keep taking her to the doctor to get treated for something when it may be something else entirely. What should I do?

Answer:
The next time she has it or if she still has it, I would go to one more doctor. a dermatologist may be able to know what it is by seeing it and not doing any tests. If she stil has it, take pictures and write down when it appears (seasons) and when it goes away and what you have given her. It is a pita but writing down what she eats each day may help figure it out. My aunt has thes odd "alergic' reactions a few times a year..she gets hives. It isn't anything specific she eats and noone knows why she gets them. I think it could be a chemical(there are so many) on a fruit or veggie, or in a specific food or brand of food. A few times a year my sisters lips swell up like sausages! She thinks it is something in foods, it always happens after she has gone to a restaraunt so it must be a spice or chemical in what she ate that day. Writing down when she gets it...is it at a specific time during the year?

have you tried hydrocortisone cream? it can be purchased without a prescription. when my son has gotten bad rashes thats what his doctor had me put on it.
I would go back and have them run a full allergy panel. This is very concerning as it does sound very much like an allergic reaction.. If you have been going to the same PCP all of these times I'd also highly suggest going to a new PCP and getting a second opinion. How fast does it spread? It also sounds like Impitigo (sp)? but that is an infection picked up at places like playground and such. Its slow to spread so it would take weeks to get as bad as you are saying, and is treated with antibiotics. I think the most important thing is to get another opinion at this point- and don't rule out allergy, because they may have only tested for a few common allergys and not as much as they should have. Best wishes!
You didn't say whether she had a fever, but it sounds like Roseola.
treat her with liquid benedryl -exactly as the pediatrician recommends. if a food allergy is suspected, keep a food diary, avoid all cow's milk products, and follow up with the pediatrician.
Go and see a dermatologist. Here are some web sites also you may check.
