6 year old afraid of taking a shower?
-
my little sister is 6 and shes been afraid to take a shower for as long as i can remember!! so today out of curiosity i turned on the shower while she was playing around in the water during her bath. she completely started freaking out and ran out of the bath tub and wouldnt stop crying for 2 hours. she is so scared of the shower. i dont understand how a 6 year old could be afraid of taking a shower? i feel horrible that i did that but i wanted to see how terrified she was of it. how can she over come this fear of taking a shower?

Answer:
I don't know what it is, but every time I have ever taken a shower with a child, they cry hysterically.

You need to introduce it slowly to her as it obviously terrifies her. A lot of kids don't like the sensation of water being poured over their faces and maybe this is where it comes from. I would get her a watering can toy for her to play with in the bath don't even go near the shower with her anymore and let her play with that. As she grows confident with it play with her with it pouring the water over you then when she sees that is fun pour the water on her hands keep doing this and slowly progress to the body and then eventually the head if you can get her to accept water being poured on her head then maybe get a tap shower still bath her and maybe introduce the bath tap shower for washing her hair and then from there eventually try taking her into the real thing. It may take a while. Before that you could try going in the shower with her but I don't think from the way she reacts you'd get that far. It is something she will eventually overcome with your help and patience but I would keep her totally from the shower for now and try what I have suggested I have a 2.5 year old who hates water on her face and I have been using the watering pot method and she is slowly coming round. Good Luck
Tell her its like going through a water sprinkler. It's soo fun.
I agree...shower with her one day (in your swimsuits...like after swimming) Or try an outdoor shower like at a pool or beach.
Some kids...even adults don't like water in their face. She will more than likely grow out of this fear...but as of now just let her take a bath.
maybe talk to her about it and find out why she is scared of it. try showing her that it is not going to hurt her by first just turning it on and letting her watch it. later have her try to put her hand under the spray. after that stand in the shower with it on to show that it didn't hurt you. by then she should at least be less afraid. but the biggest thing is to not push her to hard. you can make things worse trying to make them better when it comes to fear. throwing a person into a pool does not make them less afraid of water.....it makes it worse and then they no longer trust you.
Wait a while before trying again! she is 6 so ask her why she is afraid of the shower. This way you will know what it is that she doesn't like. Then when you know..you can talk to her about it. Then in a few weeks ask her if she would like to take a shower with you...in you swim suits! Come, on..lets take a shower together, I love showers..the warm water feels so nice. If you don't want the water getting into your face...you can stand back. When I introduced showers to my kids, I ran the shower..then had them get in...in the back of the tub. You should def. wait awhile before tryin anything and promise her you will NEVER turn the shower on without telling her..not ever again! Ask her what she is afraid of in a few days...at her age she will be able to tell you why.
I didn't start taking showers until I was 9 or 10! When she's ready, she'll start taking showers. Scaring her like that is only making it worse.
Someone should take a shower with her
