Q&A about an at home group babysitting service?
-
Hi! I'm 23 and have been working with children since I was 14. I'm currently tutoring a 3-year-old autistic boy and working occasionally in the daycare at the gym I work at. I'm going to school for nursing. I was trying to find a way to make extra money for school and was thinking about creating a group babysitting service in mine and my boyfriend's basement. There's a lot of room so I'd have plenty of room for children. My plan right now would be to have a file cabinet with files on each of the children, with ages, birthdays, favorite activites, medical info, and anything else that may be of importance along with a waiver and payment info. I was going to paint the walls and bring in some kids to put handprints and stuff on one. A couple walls I was going to cover in paper and actually let the children decorate them once a month. I'd have little tables and chairs and a bunch of coloring sheets and crayons. I'd get children's books for all ages. There's a bathroom down there, and I'd create an area for a changing room. I'd have different types of snacks available, and have an area for parents to say it's ok. I'd have music for them. I was gonna put the soft puzzle things that have the alphabet and animals that go on the ground on the floor for them. I was wondering if any parents had suggestions for things that would be important to have available, cost prices, amount of kids that would be appropriate. For prices, I was thinking bout setting up different packages. Would this be something people would be interested in? Eventually I'd like to become a licensed daycare and me and one of my coworkers would actually lease out a building, but I thought this would be a good start point. I'd get my background check done and have it available to any parents and a copy always there. I'd get CPR and first aid certified. I've been trained through the army, but would actually get it certified through Red Cross. I was thinking of advertising through craigslist, any other suggestions on getting the word out? Any ideas on names for the group? I want it to be during evenings, when most daycares aren't open anymore. If you would be interested, what would be a good evening time to open/close. Should I do a special overnight if needed? Our house does have a spare bedroom. I know it's a lot of questions, but thank you for any answers. If you have a ton to say or questions of your own to make it clearer, please e-mail at [email protected] Thanks :)

Answer:
Call it whatever you want, what you are proposing to do is called day care and in most places you need a license or you could be in real trouble. Go online and look for the regulations in your state.
