What is exactly nvq2 in childcare & development?

How can i support positive behavior in a childcare setting according to age, needs and ability? (CCLD NVQ2)?

  • Answer:

Please indicate what age group you are referring to...and how many kids are you talking about.... In general, start by paying more attention to positive behaviors. Praise someone when they do something good (good listening, sitting, eating, sharing, etc). Make it known that you LOVE that kind of behavior. Other kids should catch on and want the praise from you as well. Do NOT point out negative behaviors in front of everyone (if you have to address a bad behavior, pull the kid to the side and address it quietly and privately). Chances are, kids do bad behaviors to get attention from you and other kids. If you don't pay attention to it, they'll eventually stop doing it. Make your expectations clear ahead of time (keep it simple, too). Make a short set of rules that the whole group of kids decides on. Keep the rules positive (instead of "no hitting", use "Keep hands to yourself"). The word "no" tends to be a turn off... Start a group reward jar or chart...each time someone does something good, add a sticker to the chart, or a marble to the jar. When the group as a whole is really good for a period of time, add another (or two). Make it known that when the stickers or marbles reach a certain point, there will be a prize (party, pizza, field trip, etc.). Give the "troubled" kids a special responsibility (help with snack, for example). They will love the special positive attention! Minimize opportunities for misbehavior by making activities shorter and varied. Have 10-15 mins of a quiet activity, and then 10-15 mins of a physical or fun activity (playground, musical chairs, freeze dance). Then, switch back to a quiet activity. Also, alternate structured activities with non-structured. Consider physical needs as well...maybe the kid who can't sit still on the floor has a sensory issue and would benefit from a cushion or being allowed to sit on his feet. Integrate all kinds of activities throughout the day...art, music, physical, reading, math, science, writing. Find out each kids' strengths and use what you find out to your advantage. Hope this helps!
