What can you do with a Bachelor's in Child Development?

6 month old speech and language delay?

  • My 6 month old daughter was born with gbs sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis when she was born. Early intervention came and did an evaluation on her the other day and said that all of her motor skills and other development is right on track, but she seems to be 1-2 months behind in her language and speech development. They said that at around 4-5 months babies should be going "mamamamama", "dadadada" and/or 'bababa". She screams, laughs and makes some o sounds with her mouth but none of those yet. My question for you all is, do you remember where your 6 month old was/is development wise and the sounds he or she was making? I have a bachelor's degree in family studies so I have a background in child development.. but I wanted to see what other moms are saying about their kid's development at this age. Thanks!

  • Answer:

I think that if she is making lots of baby noises and stuff she is fine. If she isn't saying momma or dada at 1 then be worried not yet :) she sounds fine to me just keep reading and talking to her she will start talking and when she does she will have lots to say :))

What the other user said, worry when shes a year old. I never met a 4-5 month old baby that knew how to say mamma or baba that's maybe around 6-9 months. All kids develop differently who knows by next month she might start you just have to talk to her a lot and repeat small words like mama and eventually she will start to mimic.

My son is 13 months old, and parents as teachers has been active with him since he was born. And has never mentioned any delay with him. He gurgled and coo'd at 6 months, but never really babbled. He now can say hi and mama and trys to mimic words, but uses pointing more so than verbal words. Either way he gets his point across and is considered to be normal.
