Do I have Growth Hormone Deficiency?

Does my daughter have growth hormone deficiency?

  • My daughter was born in August 2004 above average: 54 cm and 3.7 kgs. At one year she was 80 cm and 11 kgs - all these stats in the 75th percentile. Now she is more than 3 and 1/2 and she is 95 cm and 13.5 kgs - she has only gained 2.5 kilos (a little more than 5 lbs) in almost 3 years!! She is now in the 10th percentile, her curve is atrocious! I have repeatedly consulted my doctor about this and we took some blood tests for her iron, which was fine. He keeps on telling me there is nothing wrong with skinny kids, but there is no one in our family (either side) who is 'undersized'. Now one of my friends told me about growth hormone deficiency. Does anyone have any information - is this rare or common? Am I overreacting?

  • Answer:

my son is actually on growth hormones currently. he has what is called "idiopathic short stature". what you need to do is look at her growth curve. Does it go up, or down. My son dropped a few % every few years. At 10 years old the school nurse referred us to a health department program to get him tested for problems. You need to consult a pediatric endocrinologist with your concerns. They are trained to deal with these things. he now gets a shot 6 nights a week from us, and goes to see the endocrinolgist every 3 months. the first year he grew 4 inches and gained 15 pounds.

I don't think you are overreacting, Because I know where you are comming from, but Growth hormone dificincy (If diagnosed corectly) is accually pretty rare. My daughter is also small she is 27months and weighs a whopping 22 lbs. (3rd percentile or lower) We have been to a bunch of appts and done 100's of blood test to see why she was not growing well (She was born at 7lbs 11oz which is a good weight and has never gained well since) but after all these tests it showed nothing, She is just small and no one in either side of the family is under weight (Short yes, skinny no.) There is nothing wrong with skinny kids some are just made like that regardless of how big their family is But if you are still worried, ask your dr is he is willing to do more tests, as you are worried about her growth, and if not please don't hesitate to get a 2nd opinion. (Heck I walked out of our 1st peditricians office in the middle of her 18mo appt, because he kept brushing me off, and found a new dr, that we all love) Good Luck and try not to worry it's probably nothing more then she is just a peanut
