I am an Ultrasound Technician.

Can You Be An Ultrasound Technician Only For Prenatal?

  • I know ultrasounds are used on many things, but can you become an ultrasound technician specializing only on fetal development and prenatal care? Does an obstetrician perform the ultrasounds or do they have a special nurse/technician come in and do the ultrasounds for them? I'm extremely interested in prenatal development and was thinking about being an obstetrician but found out that it required 12 years of schooling and a really good GPA. Unfortunately, my GPA is pretty low considering the fact that my whole freshmen year and about three quarters of my sophomore year, I was foolish and just didn't care about my grades. Now, though, I regret that. I also think that 12 years is a lot of school and I really wouldn't like being in school until I'm 30. So I was wondering if there are special ultrasound technicians for prenatal development instead of being an OB? And if so, what are the requirements?

  • Answer:

Usually all you have to do is go to a technical school for Ultrasound Technician. Unfortunately, you have to learn about all the types of ultrasounds. Including anatomy and diagnosis. After you graduate you can apply for jobs for specific prenatal ultrasounds but you must learn about all. There is not course that specializes in one.
