How do I find out if I'm eligible for Medicaid?

Would u be uncomfortable with medicaid reffering you to UF dept obgyn for first exam during pregnancy?

  • i am pregnant with my first child. being a victim of rape and molestation at a very very young age i tend to find pelvic examinations horrifying and degrading. i am about 9 wks and was reffered by medicaid to make an appointment at the UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF OBSTETRICS and GYNECOLOGY. i am very scared and concerned that this is a school full of UN CERTIFIED STUDENTS there to make their rotation. as this being my first pregnancy i want re assurance that the person examining me is a board certified doctor not a room full of med students. i understand they have to learn but with my past im very uncomfortable knowing that someone who isnt a real doctor who doesnt really have that board certified doctor experience is going to be poking and prodding inside of me (and god knows how many other strange young kids/students will make their rounds) like im some sort of science experiment there so they can benifit from me. i feel like they reallly wont care whats best for me, all they are concerned about is what can they get out of it. and this dosnt just apply for the exams but the birth of my baby too. i dont want some uncertified person trying to sew me back up or cutting me up when they reallly probably dont know what theyre doing. so i guess what i want to know does medicaid always refer women to SCHOOLS to get exams, has anyone ever been to one (if so please share with me your experience) and am i the only woman in the world concerned about a uncertified college kid dealing with my most intimate lady parts during a very special time...HELP I FEEL LIKE IM GOING NUTTERS lol BTW I ALSO HEARD THAT PLACES LIKE THESE PUSH ABORTIONS SO THEY CAN PERFORM A SURGICAL PROCEDURE AND MOST LIKELY HAVE A ROOM FULL OF STUDENTS PERFORM EXAMINATIONS WHILE YOUR ASLEEP WITHOUT CONSENT for the sake of "learning" (pelvic, rectal etc) IM SO SCARED PLZ HELPPPP

  • Answer:

Having a baby can be very stressful, especially considering your past. However, just from a legal standpoint, I don't think they can let a bunch of med students loose on your downstairs area without that fancy MD. At most, the med students ask you questions to get the viewpoint of the patient IF YOU CONSENT. They especially will not get near that area if you do not consent to it. While UF is a teaching hospital, it is really top notch with extremely knowledgeable and caring physicians that take their work very seriously. Although I do not have personal experience in their OBGYN department, I don't think they would push an abortion on you or anything like that. Relax! You are having a baby and this should be a happy time in your life!

Honestly teaching hospitals are one of the best places to get care. The docs at those hospitals are usually up-to-date on the current research. Teaching hospitals are where all the high risk patients in my state are referred to. Just because you are going to a teaching hospital does not mean you have to allow patients in your room or allow them to do the exam. You could tell them you'd rather have the doc do it. They will be okay with that. I've had nothing but wonderful experiences at the teaching hospitals where I live.

Why can't you pick your own doctor?

call back the medicaid office or whomever and tell them you are uncomfortable about going to a training school. Ask them if they can refer you else where OR if you can pick your own doctor.

The doctors that are at places like that are not medical students. They are in their residency, they do have supervising doctors but they are not still considered students. I live in a town that has a HUGE university and the doctor's office I go to has residents. I have been seeing a resident my whole pregnancy and I like her better than some of the head OBGYN's that I have seen when I have had to make trips to Labor & Delivery for medical reasons. And they are "real" doctors they have completed their full schooling but are required to be a resident before they are an attending doctor. I have NO idea where you have gotten your information about what residents are but it is SO off. They do not push abortions, they are not an abortion clinic, even places like that don't push abortions. Medicaid refers women to these places because most OBGYN's or Women's clinics that are not like this do not accept Medicaid. You can call other Women's Clinics or OBGYN's to see if they accept Medicaid but you may be out of luck.
