How to mail a small package?

How to mail a package?

  • Hi i'm 17 and need to mail a package and have NO IDEA what so ever on how to do this so i'm hoping you guys can help. Does it matter if I use a box that was previously shipped? As long as i take the label off? Also how do I need to label the box? Can I just write on it or do I need to make my own label, etc. What do I do when I get to the post office and how much should it cost to send a small box with a stuffed animal and a letter in it? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :) I'm re-posting here because i figured a lot of parents would have answers to this

This is very simple and all the supplies you need are right at the Post Office, for free. All you have to do is take whatever you want to mail to the Post Office and pick out the smallest box you can fit the stuffed animal in. There will also be a free label for you to use to address the package and to put your address on as well. The cost of the package will determine what size the box is. The Post Office has "Flat Rate" boxes. No matter how much the box weighs, it is just one price to send it anywhere in the USA. Or, you can use another box marked "Priority" and pay the postage according to the weight. The great thing about mailing things at the Post Office is that they have all the mailing supplies and advise on the most cost effective way to mail things. They are very willing to help you learn how to send a package because they want you to come back and send more packages.

You can use a box that was from something else that you got in the mail. Just remove any bar codes that might be on the box and cross out any writing with a sharpie. Put your stuff in the box and tape it with packing tape. If you're sending it regular mail, just write the to and from on the box. Then, go wait in line at the post office and they can give you the prices for the different ways you can mail it. Also, for a less expensive option, the post office has flat rate boxes that cost a set price to mail a small box is under ten dollars. You could ask about that as well.

If you want it to actually get there send it UPS or FedEx. Just go to a location that does it (usually copy places and they have a neon sign in the window) and the person at the counter will take care of you. Just bring your item, money and the name and address of the receiver.

I send everything Priority mail, because I can use the Priority Mail flat rate envelopes or boxes (which are free), and track online if I print my own label. All you do is set up an account at USPS.com, print your own label on a piece of paper and just tape it to the envelope with packing tape. Depending on the size box, you can send anything anywhere in the US and get it there within three days for less than $5. And since everything is done before you get there, you don't have to stand in line at the post office. (You could not pay me to use Fedex.....talk about incompetent. But I have never had a problem with USPS, and I have done a LOT of shipping.)

Yes you can use an old box. Make sure you either take off or hide any previous shipping labels that were on it. You don't really have to write the address directly on the box, because when you take it to USPS/FedEx/UPS you will fill out a form with all the shipping info and it will be taped or or printed out onto the box. Pricing depends on the distance and the weight of the box. The post office has a little calculator that can give you an idea of your shipping costs. If it's a small light box, chances are it will be in the 5-10 dollar range. http://postcalc.usps.gov/
