How do I get my 5 month old to sleep in his crib?

How can i get my 5 month old to sleep in her crib?

  • My 5 month old daughter was doing great sleeping through the night in her crib and then all of the sudden for the past week she refuses to sleep in it. I will give her a bottle and rock her to sleep and the second I lay her down she is wide awake screaming. I have tried letting her cry for a bit and checking on her but she never stops and crys so hard I don't want to just let her "cry it out". I just don't understand how she can be fine with the crib one week and the next she won't sleep in it at all. The crib is right next to our bed for now so it couldn't be that she feels to far away. Any advice? please help!

  • Answer:

Try putting her in her crib, rubbing her back and talking softly or singing to her until she is asleep. Then quietly sneak out of the room. Don't rock her to sleep or she will come to expect that and will never want to lie down and go to sleep on her own. Learning to comfort herself and being able to go to sleep in her own bed by herself is a huge developmental step so it's best to deal with it right away. It may be tough but it's best for her in the long run.

Poor thing. Is she feeling OK? She could have an earache... I would put her in the crib while she is awake and put your hand on her belly and stay there for like 10 minutes, slowly removing your hand to get her used to it.. It could be she smells you and realizes that if she cries you'll come and get her.. Once I got my daughter into her own room we all slept a lot better. They say the cry it out does work though. I did the hand thing for a good week or two sleeping on a mattress on the floor of her room. Finally I moved into my bedroom... I would keep trying the hand thing letting her know that you are there, and if she wakes up screaming just put your hand on her again soothing her, but not picking her up.. It worked well for me. My sister taught me that trick and she has 4 children... Good luck and congratulations.
