How to vacation with a 2 month old?

Vacation for a 2 to 3 month old?

  • Our due date is may 6, and we were thinking about going on a vacation/visiting family somewhere between july and august, probably about a week. We live in Pennsylvania and my boyfriend's family in South carolina. We're used to visiting summer and main holidays and we really would like to show off our new little baby. It's about a 600 mile trip and we'd be driving! We already know we'd be packing so much it'd feel like we're moving, and instead of driving the whole 600 in a day like usual we planned on stopping half way through at a hotel for the night to make it easier along with stopping a million times throughout the day to stretch, feed, and change baby. A few things i have some questions about is... Will i feel up to making the trip? I have no doubt ill be exhausted from being a new mommy, but the trip might not be so bad because i'm sure ill have lots of helping hands. Will the trip be too much for baby at that age? Are there places that will heat up the baby's bottles for me, like gas stations, restaurants, etc.?

One of the wonderful things about young babies is that they are marvelously portable. They are small (so are light to carry), and dont' care WHERE they are, as long as they are with mama. For the drive you'd want to plan to take a few days enroute (baby will need to eat and be changed often), but 600 miles isn't unreasonable. As for food -- is there some particular reason you already know that you won't be able to breastfeed? Nursing babies are SOOO easy to travel with. Again, they can be fed anywhere, no worry about keeping formula cold/warming it up/washing bottles/being sure you've packed enough/different water supplies/etc. Unless there IS some clear reason you already know you'll be unable to breastfeed (double mastectomy, on lithium) I'd plan to breastfeed during the trip (and for as long as possible afterwards.)

The baby won't care whether it is asleep in your car or your house. I'd expect you to be fit enough to drive for 300 miles in a day at 2 months and certainly at 3 months. More of an issue will be how much sleep you are getting. You might be better off driving it all in one day rather than driving 300 miles, getting not much sleep in an unfamiliar place with a young baby, and then trying to drive another 300. Places may be wary of heating up the bottle for you in case they make a mistake and your baby is burned...but they'll probably cheerfully give you a bowl of hot water to heat it up yourself. But have you really given up on breastfeeding _this_ early?

It's much easier traveling with an infant who doesn't need to move around than an older baby. however, some babies are miserable in their car seats and cry while they're in them. Let's hope that yours is not one of them. It is important for both of you to get out and move around about every 2 hours. No one can tell you when you'll be ready to make the trip, but by 2-3 months, you should be up to it. And you'll be sitting all day in the car, and may be able to sleep as well. There is no problem for a baby this age on this type of trip (unless s/he hates the carseat). Not much you can do about that. Never count on someone else helping with formula preparation or heating. It is not safe to microwave anything for a baby as it creates hot spots. I know that people do it all the time, but it is not recommended. if you're sure that you won't be breastfeeding (the cheapest and easiest solution) just take water bottles and make up formula as you need to. Do not allow it to heat up in a hot car, however. That can release toxins from the plastic into the water. Make sure that anyone who touches the baby washes their hands well first, especially if you are not breastfeeding. Their are viruses around even in the summer, and you definitely don't want to have a sick baby while you're away from home. Have a great time!

Your going to feel excited to make the trip:) Your new baby is going to sleep most the time because he or she is a new born... The trip will be fine fr the baby at that age. It will actually be better for them. What does a new born baby do at home anyway? Sleep eat, and poo!...If you stop half way thats a good thing...Give the little one some tummy time, and some interaction. I believe you can get the bottle heated up at restaurants, and most gas stations have a microwave. I give my daughter water room temperature because there was no way I was going to hand my bottle over to some stranger to heat it up for me. I do give her tap water. I get a pitcher and fill it the night before and by the morning, its ready for her. Its the way to go. And I got the idea from the NICU she was in. So if its fine for a NICU baby, its fine for a healthy baby.

At 2 months old my husband and I took a road trip with our daughter and it was AWESOME!!! We did it again this summer (although this year it was 11 days on the road, not just 3 lol) and it was still a blast but I found it a bit harder because when she was 2 months old she just slept in the car, now she wants to be entertained. lol. Tips for a 2 month old in a car: bring some soft rattles. lol. That's about all they need. They still sleep a lot. I will say though, don't forget that with a child in a car seat (especially if it's a bucket seat, which compresses the breathing of an infant) that every hour or 2 (2 at MOST) you need to stop and take the baby out of the car seat for 15 minutes. So make sure to plan for those stops. Most gas stations and restaurants won't heat up bottles but if you're breastfeeding you don't need to worry about it. Seriously, just lean over the car seat and the baby eats right there. However, if you are bottle feeding (which we were at the time), boil up some water before you leave and fill a bunch of large water bottles. Then you have the water clean already and can just mix it and feed it at room temp.
