What is this rash on me?

My sister brought her baby over with a really bad diaper rash...what should I do?

  • I watch all my siblings kids at one of my sister's house (she's the only one that has soft carpet and there are two infants...)...Anyway, one of my sisters brought over her kids, and the boy is still in diapers. I noticed yesterday that he had an ugly rash that seemed to just be spotty and red, so I put some cream and powder on it (I didn't know then that it was yeast infection cream, not rash medicine). Today, the rash covers his whole little butt. My sister said she let him sleep without a diaper on last night because it was so bad. I had to put a diaper on him (she brought him without one) because of the carpet and he is only a year old and pees like there is no tomorrow... I don't have any real diaper rash cream, but I do have the yeast cream and baby powders. My car can only fit three people in it, and I have six kids that I'm watching so I can't go to the store. No one can bring me any because they don't work close. What should I do? I could probably be resourceful, if I just knew what to use? Any tips on home-made diaper-rash cream? Should I just use the powders only? Or is the yeast cream okay to use? I don't have any kids of my own, so I don't really know...

  • Answer:

CORN STARCH POWDER! extremely water resistant...cool on bum...protects skin and rolls all liquid right off baby. caution: can be a messy application, so keep a towel on hand

Vaseline can also help. The key is when you change him to make sure his bottom is completely dry. You also need to keep on top of his dirty diapers. His bottom needs to be as dry as possible in order for it to heal properly. If you use vaseline, make sure his bottom is completely dry before you put it on, then apply it and put the diaper on. The Vaseline will help keep a barrier between his skin and wetness in the diaper.

Don't put the baby powder on him, most have perfume and he might have a contact dermatitis (allergic rash). If he wears disposable diapers, they have perfume in them as well (package is marked 'scented'). My daughter was highly allergic to every brand of disposable made and got an awful rash. What cured it was using cloth diapers and washing them twice in hot water; once with a soap washing powder (not detergent washing powder) and the second wash to re-rinse it thoroughly. All her clothes had to be washed in this way as well as sheets, blankets, etc. The zinc oxide diaper creams are best for protecting the baby's skin. For right now, since you can't go to the store, if you have some corn starch in your cupboard, use that in place of the baby powder. And I don't think a tiny bit of the yeast ointment would hurt him. Some cortisone cream mixed with the zinc diaper cream would help too. If you or your sister can find products with no perfumes in them, use those on him once his bottom clears up. And be careful as to which soaps and lotions you use on him. No perfumes.
