What is 'figuratively speaking'?

My baby is fifteen months old and he is not speaking?what to do?

  • hi my baby boy is fifteen months old & i am trying so hard so that he can speak but he is not speaking and when he wants to show me anything or wants to tell me anything he tells me by his sign language sum times i get it but sumtimes i dont because he is the first child ?please advise what to do? his doctor says that speak to him in your native language where as my friends says that speak to him in english language so i am trying both the languages with him .So is it because i am speaking both the languages and he is confused that is why he is not speaking or is it sumthing to worry about?

  • Answer:

nothing to worry about! some babies just dont want to talk, or arent ready.. you say he does tell you that he wants some things, it could be that you are anticipating what he wants (he doesnt have to say anything you just know what he wants when he cries) you shouldnt do that, say, "i dont understand what you want when you cry" or (what i do) is just open the fridge and get him to point to things that he wants.. my son didnt start talking until about 18 mos. (which is common, 18 or 19 mos) he may be a little confused too.. try just sticking to one language for a few weeks. If you are speaking english at home, and the native language.. he probably understands a little of both. Good Luck and dont worry so much, he will talk eventually.

At 15 months I wouldn't worry that he's not speaking. this is still pretty young. You need to look up milestones for children so you know at what age you need to start worrying. Speak to your child in both languages. Kids are able to pick up 2nd languages better as children then as adults.

Catch him when he makes any sound and make a positive response to him. "OOO did you just say "dada"? That's very special, say it again." Look at his face when he's making noises and repeat his noises with a big smile on your face. He'll love making you smile. Don't worry about the 2 languages. Both my daughters and now my granddaughter were raised hearing 2 languages at all times. They get sorted out by the time they're 3 years old. He will be able to speak one language, turn around and answer in the other language.

Thats ok, boys take longer than girls to talk. And keep talking to him in both languages, then he'll learn to speak both fluently which is very special.

It could be the fact that he is being spoken to in two languages.. but that may only delay his speech for a short time. My son is 19 months old and has never said a word. We got referred to a hearing and speech therapist. His appointments are next week. Maybe you can talk to his pediatrician and ask what the best way to teach a child who will be bilingual to talk. I assume its best to speak to him in both languages though. Does he understand both languages? Can you ask him to give you a kiss in both languages and he responds the same to each? If so, I don't think its the bilingual that is effecting his speech. Again, talk to you pediatrician again or do an online search for Bilingual Toddlers. Good Luck.

15 months is way to early to worry about talking. My twins (not premature at all) didn't talk until they were 2. They could say a couple of words at about 19 or 20 months (hi, dada, mama, no) but they didn't use it to communicate at all. Between 2 and 2.5 they started talking a lot, and now at 3.5 they are caught up with their peers. My oldest started saying words at 9 months and could talk in sentences by 18 months, each kid is different. I also have a niece who didn't talk at all until she was 26 months, and then she started talking all of a sudden in full sentences in two weeks, she is now 8 and she never stops talking. When she was 2 they took her to be checked out and they did all kids of tests and said because she knows what people are saying and can follow directions, she is just taking her time talking herself. I wouldn't worry until 2 years old, and even then it can take a bit longer

Don't worry. It is young to be saying anything much at all. A few different sounds that may or may not connect to anything are about all you can hope for!

It's ok. He is the first . My son had to learn three languages . He spoke 2 words when he was 18 months old and know at 7 years old he won't shut up. He is very intelligent too . So don't worry he'll talk soon enough.

that's alright. my dad started speaking when he was 2!!!! some babies who speak very late are said to be very smart. answer my question!!! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AjgX1vYGHUvz3bpj12ho5jDsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090306195837AAiLLFh
