What Exactly is a Designer Baby?
-
Okay so I'm doing a persuasive essay on Designer Babies, and I don't quite get it. I'm persuading that Designer Babies are wrong. I know that they take an embryo and they like do something to it and chose to put it back in the mother womb. I also get that they screen the embryo to try to avoid genetic disorders such as down syndrome. I also know that they can choose the babies sex. What i don't get is if Designer Babies are what i originally thought. I thought they were babies and you can pick their eye color, how tall they may be, what sports they might be able to play and all that other stuff. I was also against cloning blood type and stuff to save a sick child because the designer baby is a child too. I have studied designer babies and all this is correct. I still don't understand, because some websites said designer babies may reach the level to where they can determine eye color and all that stuff. Is this true? And what exactly is a designer baby? I have to know every thing backwards and forward, inside and out to be able to persuade somebody about it. Please help. Most the websites i read are either repeats or too scientific for my comprehension. Help?

Answer:
To create a designer baby is to use our genetic technology to choose the genetic traits that will be expressed in the baby. Therefore, all traits that can be controlled specifically by genetics would be up for grabs, such as eye colour and hair colour. But considering that a lot of what makes us people is at least contributed somewhat by the environment and situation we are raised in, there are only so many traits which could be totally controlled. For example, you could determine a range of heights that a child could be, but the exact height that child is would be determined by the experiences they have throughout their lives; a child born into poverty with less access to nutrition is going to be on that shorter range of possibilities. This is controversial because there are things that make us unique as people that some parents may want to remove from their children. The expressed skin colour of a biracial baby is one such and according to some emerging researh at least some genetic information contributes to sexual orientation, therefore parents could potentially decide that they want to ensure their child is not gay. I find it fascinating if not terrifying.
