8 week old sleeping & eating more?
-
Our 8 week old has always had a hard time sleeping during the day but had been wonderful at night, only waking 1 or 2 times to eat. 4 days ago he started sleeping through the night, however this coincided with him eating a lot more during the day, but also being more tired and napping more during the day. We have also noticed that when he is awake, he is only content for about 15 minutes before getting fussy and seeming to be fighting off sleep...again. Is it normal for an 8 week old to be this tired/hungry? Last week he was so alert during the day, now he just seems tired and hungry all the time. Its Sunday night so I can't call the doctor until tomorrow and I just wanted to have some peace of mind so I myself could sleep tonight! Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom/advice!

Answer:
It sounds like a growth spurt. Young babies go through several big ones where it seems like all they do for several days is eat and sleep. I've also noticed with my kids (even my 4- and 5-year-olds) that sometimes they eat a ton for several days and then sleep a ton for several days (or vice versa). Expect that his sleeping and eating patterns will change a lot in the first 6 months, and I've found that it's difficult to count on any routine for very long during that time. It's hard work to grow that quickly! As long as you're feeding him when he's hungry and helping him fall asleep when he seems tired, you're doing just fine.

In my experience, this is normal. Both of my babies were very hungry, sleepy and fussy when they went through growth spurts, which is what this sounds like. They tend to go through this every couple of months. Enjoy the peaceful nights while you can! :)
congrats on your 8 week old boy. i have an 8 week old girl who is just like that. she is only content for about 15 min at a time before wanting something or sometimes nothing. she was having one night a week where she stayed up until 2 am just because she didn't want a bottle or dummy, her nappy would be fine and she had no wind but since putting half a teaspoon on farex in her last bottle of the day, she will feed at 10pm and sleep through until 5 am. i spoke to the doctor and she said it was fine to do. she's just that bit extra hungry and that's why she was unsettled. my doctor said babies usually seem unsettled by week 8, and it's normal. she called it an 8 week itch. i wouldn't stress.
My 22 month old was and still is a sleepy child. At 2 months your baby is going through so many changes. It is normal for them to have periods where all they want to do is sleep and eat. Then at other times it is all but impossible to get them to eat and sleep. If you are truly worried by all means call his doctor it never hurts. Just feed him whenever he is hungry and let him be when he is sleepy. Trust me the time will come when you are praying that he will sleep just a bit longer. Enjoy it while you can mommy! You are doing a fantastic job!
