How long does it take to hand-milk a cow?

How long did it take your baby to get used to cow's milk?

  • My daughter just turned a year old and at her check-up at the doctor's, I was told to start phasing her off the bottle by cutting out 8 ounces of formula per day and to give cow's milk in her sippy cup with each meal. Start off with 2oz. and work up to 4oz. per meal. My daughter is so used to having either juice ir water in her sippy, that when I put milk in it, she takes one sip and drops her cup once she realized what it is. It's only been a few days since I've been trying whole milk...but her doctor said the process should take approximately one month. What if she doesn't end up liking milk? Or will she just end up taking to it as long as I keep trying with each meal?

  • Answer:

no. Start with giving her whole milk mixed with formula in her sippy. She will refuse the taste. it is SO different that that tangy formula taste. Try giving her 4 ounces formula with 2 ounces whole milk one day. Then a few days later give her 3 ounces and 3 ounces and then 4 ounces of milk to 2 ounces formula and then finally all whole milk. It took my son about two weeks to get used to whole milk plain.. You can try this and see if it works for you. My pediatrician recommended it to me and I danced when my son took the whole milk plain! So exciting! Be aware that your formula purchacing days are almost over!!

Be patient. Eventually she will end up liking it. It takes time, lots of perserverence and lots of milk being spit out. But in time, she will enjoy it as if she has been taking it her whole life and things will be simple. I forget these things after a while! my kids are 6 and 3 and my daughter hated the transition from formula to milk, but my son was fine. I remember my mom told me to put flavored jello mix in the milk to get her to drink it, but it didnt really work! It took her about two weeks to like milk. Just be strong and soon this problem will be a memory for you too!

Hi, i'm at the same stage - when my daughter sips milk from her sippy cup she just gags because it's not what she expects. I've tried giving it to her in a normal cup so she can see it, but she's just getting over a cold and refusing milk at the moment (even formula from her bottle). So I will try again when she is feeling better. What I have been doing before her cold though, was to top up her bottle of formula with cows milk. So first i tried 6oz of formula and 1 of milk, then 5oz formula, 2 of milk etc. I was up to about half and half before the cold came! I have to say I was never a big fan of cows milk when I was little, but I loved milk shakes! Could you add some flavourings to make it more palatable? I used to have it with blended strawberries or raspberries..

I started adding cow's milk to my girls' formula bottles about a month before their first b-day. I started replacing 2 out of 8 oz with whole milk. Then each week or so adding another 2 oz until the bottles were entirely cow's milk. They had no problems at all- they did not notice anything.

i started giving my daughter about 4 ounces of cow's milk in her cup for about a month before she turned one. since your daughter seems resistant, i would recommend adding a half scoop of formula to the cow's milk so that the taste is more familiar to her.

My wee boy is 14mths and is on cows milk now also. If she likes, she can get cows milk in a bottle instead of her sippie cup! If she likes it that way then that's fine, she will take it out of cups when she is ready, all children are different. So try this and keep her sippie for juice/water and this way it wont confuse her! Goodluck Leanne x
