What Is A Speedy Catheter?

What if I have to have a catheter during birth?

  • And the doctor wants to insert it BEFORE the epidural is done. Translation, I only get the epidural AFTER the bladder catheter is in. How painful will it be without any numbing or anesthetic? I was told that this is standard procedure at the hospital I will be going to, to give birth in a few months. Is there any way I can prepare for this pain (over and above the pain of labour)?

  • Answer:

"I've been reading up on catheters and in more than 75% of cases women WILL get a bladder infection from having one in" ?? Where are you getting this from? Answer: not very -- I have had one and it was a total non-event -- but if you are nervous, ask them to coat it with a topical anaesthetic. What is the response to "No, I will have it after the epidural is started, please"? It may be time to look for a better place to labour/practitioner if "standard hospital procedure" overrides comfort for no good reasons.

Mine was placed AFTER the epidural. I dont remember feeling anything. Maybe a little pressure.

I did not feel anything while the catheter was inserted and my epidural had quit working. The reason I had a catheter was cause of having a c-section and it was put in before I went to or. I had an in and out catheter while in labor also to drain out my bladder. That is where we women have it better cause it is painful for a man cause their urtha is longer than ours. If you have someone that knows what they are doing and does it right, you won't feel a thing. To answer question about catheter and c-section, yes cause as with an epidural, once it is removed the feeling comes back and you are able to get up soon after birth as with a c-section it is several hours before the feeling comes back in your lower half and you have to lay still for a bout 12 hours. I had my c-section at about 1:30 in the afternoon and it was early the next morning before it was removed and I was allowed to get up and that first step was a doozy (and quite painful) and I wanted to get back in bed.

Mine was inserted before my epidural was administered. Honestly, i'd been having back labour for well over 18 hours without medication, and compared to my contraction pains, it was nothing.

I cant really remember but if they usually do it before the epidural then you don't even really feel it. I had one and i didn't feel it it might have been a pinch or something but it didn't hurt. Its a scary thought, and its gross to see your pee collect in a bag, but its just part of having your baby, and it isn't all that scary.

Mine was inserted before too. Trust me, you won't care after you've been in labor for a while! Tmi warning...it didn't really hurt, it just made me feel like I was peeing all over the place (which I wasn't). Don't worry about it too much! Good luck and congrats:) ETA: I didn't get a bladder infection after having it, and I had it for 2 days. I also get them pretty frequently, but it didn't bother me!

I don't understand the reasoning behind doing it before the epidural is placed... I had a C-Section and they didn't do my catheter until after they did my spinal and I was already numb. Ask why you can't have it after the epidural.

I got mine after epidural and I didn't get a bladder infection after. I get bladder infections all the time.

i was cathed before my epi, I didn't feel it at all and i was a pin cushion for every new RN there. the girl who did mine had never done one before so i was her first and it took her a few tries but i still didn't feel much other then her hands were FREEZING cold. now the guy who did my epi on the other hand... i was a living pin cushion for him it was his 2nd time doing and epi and he messed up twice before getting it right, then they forgot to turn it on so they really did it for nothing by the time they noticed i was still in pain i had to push lol. i didn't have a UTI/Bladder infection with either of my sons. what i DID get an infection from was w/ my 1st son they gave me Staydol when it was still in it's trial stages and it gave me a fever of 104.1 for 3 days. but i felt fine i ended up staying in the hospital for 6 days w/ my 1st son after 33 hours of labor. with my second i was in labor for 17 hours but in the hospital for 5 days prior to labor because i was induced w/ the beginnings of Toxemia

well compared to my first birth of 22 hrs of labor and then having emergency c section. In which I felt every bit of surgery. A catheter didnt hurt. My 2nd delivery they put one in before my spinal for my c section. It hurt a little but again wasnt nothing compared to the pain of my c section. So its only few minutes and you can bear it.
